Hitoshi Sogahata (born August 2, 1979) is a famous Japanese former football player. He was a goalkeeper for the Kashima Antlers club and also played for the Japanese national team.

Playing for Clubs: Hitoshi Sogahata's Career

Sogahata was born in Kashima, Japan, on August 2, 1979. He joined his local club, Kashima Antlers, in 1998 after playing in their youth teams.

Early Years and Becoming a Regular Goalkeeper

He played his first game for Kashima Antlers on May 8, 1999. In 2000, even though he wasn't the main goalkeeper, he helped Antlers win the 2000 J.League Cup. He even won the "New Hero Award" for his great performance.

In 2001, Sogahata became the team's main goalkeeper. He played a very important role for many years. Antlers won the J1 League championship two years in a row in 2000 and 2001.

Winning Championships with Kashima Antlers

In 2002, Sogahata was chosen for the "Best Eleven" team, which means he was one of the best players in the league. Antlers also won the 2002 J.League Cup that year.

From 2007 to 2009, Kashima Antlers won the J1 League championship three times in a row! They also won the Emperor's Cup in 2007. Sogahata was a key part of these victories.

He played in every single match from 2008 to 2014, setting a J1 League record of 244 consecutive games. This shows how reliable and important he was to the team.

Later Career and Retirement

In 2015, Antlers won the J.League Cup again. In 2016, they won the J1 League and played in the 2016 FIFA Club World Cup. Sogahata played in all four matches and helped his team finish in second place.

In 2018, Sogahata played a role in Antlers winning their first-ever Asian title, the 2018 AFC Champions League.

On December 24, 2020, after more than 20 years with Kashima Antlers, Hitoshi Sogahata announced he was retiring from professional football.

Hitoshi Sogahata also played for the Japanese national team.

Playing for the Senior National Team

He played his first game for Japan on November 7, 2001, against Italy. He played a total of four games for Japan until 2003. He was also part of the Japanese team for the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

Playing in the Olympics

In August 2004, Sogahata was chosen to play for the Japan U23 national team in the 2004 Summer Olympics. He played all three matches in the tournament. Japan finished fourth in their group and did not move on to the next round.
