History of Dale City
Dale City was created by a real estate developer named Cecil Don Hylton. He chose the name "Dale City" because the area has many "hills and dales," which means rolling hills. This describes the Virginia Piedmont area well.
How Dale City Started
Cecil Hylton started his career selling farm goods. Later, he began a business selling sod (grass). He used many trucks and new ways to do his work. After World War II, many new homes were needed. So, he started building houses. Over his career, he built over 22,000 homes. He also built apartments and shopping centers.
Hylton even started his own sewer company, called Dale Service Company. He also created the first cable television companies in Prince William County.
Building the Community
Hylton's company, Hylton Enterprises, began building Dale City in 1960. They started near Interstate 95 and built westward. By 1969, the first six neighborhoods were finished. Many more were added in the 1970s and 1980s.
Several places in Dale City are named after Cecil Hylton. These include C.D. Hylton High School and the Hylton Memorial Chapel. His family's company, Hylton Realty, still sells homes in the area. They also manage shopping centers and other properties. Andrew Leitch Park, a local park, was once land given to the county by Hylton's companies.
Water and Sewer Systems
Dale City was built before many other parts of eastern Prince William County. Because of this, it has its own water and sewer systems. These are separate from other nearby towns like Woodbridge. Virginia-American Water Company provides water. Since 2013, they also provide sewer service.
Historic Building
The Russell House and Store is a very old building in Dale City. It was built in the early 1800s and is located on Minnieville Road.
