Dalia Itzik (born 20 October 1952) is an Israeli former politician. She was a member of the Knesset, which is Israel's parliament. She also held several important government jobs. On 4 May 2006, she made history by becoming the first woman to be the Speaker of the Knesset. Later, in July 2007, she served as the acting President of Israel for a short time.

About Dalia Itzik

Early Life and Education

Dalia Itzik was born in Jerusalem, a major city in Israel. Her parents were Iraqi Jews who moved to Israel. She went to a religious high school. After school, she chose not to join the Israel Defense Forces (the army) because of her religious beliefs.

She then studied to become a teacher. Later, she earned two university degrees. One was in Literature and History from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The other was in law from IDC Herzliya.

Career Before Politics

Before becoming a politician, Dalia Itzik worked as a teacher. While teaching, she led the teachers' union in Jerusalem. This meant she represented teachers and worked for their rights. She also worked as a helper to Teddy Kollek, who was the mayor of Jerusalem at the time. She was also a member of the main committee for the Israel Broadcasting Authority, which runs public TV and radio.

In 1988, Dalia Itzik was involved in a car accident. She was seriously hurt but recovered. She is married to Danny, and they have three children: Ran, Uri, and Adi. Her family lives in the Ramat Sharett neighborhood of Jerusalem.

Her Political Journey

Starting in the Knesset

Before she was first elected to the Knesset in 1992, Dalia Itzik served as the deputy mayor of Jerusalem. This role helped her understand how a city is run.

After being re-elected in 1996 and 1999, she became a government minister. From 1999 to 2001, she was the Minister of the Environment. This job involved protecting nature and keeping Israel clean.

In 2001, she became the Minister of Industry and Trade. In this role, she helped manage businesses and trade in Israel. She left this position in 2002.

More Ministerial Roles and New Parties

Dalia Itzik was elected to the Knesset again in 2003. In 2005, she served as the Minister of Communications. This job involves overseeing things like phones, internet, and television.

In 2006, she joined a new political party called Kadima. This party was started by Ariel Sharon.

Speaker of the Knesset and Acting President

After the 2006 elections, Dalia Itzik became the Speaker of the Knesset. This is a very important job, like being the head of the parliament. She was the first woman to hold this position.

In 2007, something unusual happened. The President of Israel, Moshe Katsav, had to take a leave of absence and then resigned. The Speaker of the Knesset is next in line to take over if the President cannot serve. So, Dalia Itzik became the acting President of Israel. She was the official head of the country until Shimon Peres took over as the new President on 15 July 2007.

Later Political Career

Dalia Itzik kept her seat in the Knesset after the 2009 elections. She later became the chairperson (leader) of the Kadima party. In 2012, she decided to take a break from politics and did not run in the 2013 elections.

In 2014, Dalia Itzik ran for President of Israel. She came in third place, showing she had support from many different political groups.
