Dalkena is a small place in Pend Oreille County, in the state of Washington, United States. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that don't have their own local government, like a city or town would. Instead, it's managed by the larger county government.

Exploring Dalkena's Past

Dalkena began a long time ago, in the late 1800s. Its story started when a large sawmill was built there. A sawmill is a factory where logs are cut into lumber, which is wood used for building.

How Dalkena Got Its Name

The name "Dalkena" is quite interesting! It was created by combining parts of the names of the two people who owned the sawmill. Their names were Dalton and Kennedy. So, "Dal" from Dalton and "Kena" from Kennedy came together to form "Dalkena."

The Dalkena Post Office

As the community grew, it needed a way for people to send and receive mail. Because of this, a post office was opened in Dalkena in 1903. This post office served the community for many years, helping people connect with others far away. It stayed open until 1942, when it eventually closed down.
