The city was officially set up in 1848. It was named after George Mifflin Dallas. He was an important person in American history, serving as the 11th Vice President of the United States from 1845 to 1849. On October 23, 1858, a very famous person visited Dallas City: Abraham Lincoln! He came to give a speech. Some local men, like George M. Ames, H.F. Black, and Ben Mendenhall, helped convince Lincoln to visit.

There were some people who tried to stop Lincoln's speech by tearing down the stage built for him. But other people who supported Lincoln made sure that didn't happen. Today, a special monument marks the spot where Lincoln spoke. It's located in Riverfront Park, right by the Mississippi River at the end of Oak Street.
