Dalswinton Castle, also known as Comyn's Castle, was a historic castle located in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. It stood to the south-east of the village of Dalswinton. This castle played a small but interesting role in Scotland's past.

What Was Dalswinton Castle?

Dalswinton Castle was a type of fortress built to protect land and people. Castles like this were very important in medieval times. They served as homes for powerful families and strongholds during battles.

Who Owned Dalswinton Castle?

Records show that a castle existed at this spot as early as 1250. At that time, it belonged to the powerful Comyns of Badenoch. The Comyns were a very important family in Scottish history.

Battles and Changes: The Castle's History

Dalswinton Castle saw some action during the Scottish Wars of Independence. These were times when Scotland fought for its freedom from England.

In 1301, English forces captured the castle. After its capture, a person called John de Botetourt became the castle's constable. A constable was like a manager or commander of the castle.

Even during Edward Bruce's military campaigns in Galloway between 1308 and 1309, the castle remained under English control. However, Dalswinton Castle eventually surrendered to Scottish forces in early 1313. This was a victory for the Scots in their fight for independence.

What Happened to the Castle?

Over time, castles became less important for defense. In the 17th century, a new building called the House of Dalswinton was constructed nearby. After this new house was built, Dalswinton Castle was no longer used.

The old castle was eventually abandoned. Its remains were likely taken down after 1792. Today, not much is left of the original Dalswinton Castle.
