Dandaloo is a small rural area in New South Wales, Australia. It is located about 370 kilometers northwest of Sydney. You can find it about 15 kilometers northeast of Albert. It is also about 40 kilometers southwest of Trangie. Dandaloo is part of the Narromine Council area.

About Dandaloo

Dandaloo is a quiet place with a rich history. It is known for its connection to Australian poetry. The area is mostly made up of farms and open land.

A Name with a Story

The name Dandaloo was chosen by a local landowner named Florent Martel. He named it after a town in France. This shows how early settlers often brought names from their home countries.

Dandaloo is also famous because of a poem. The well-known Australian poet Banjo Paterson wrote about it. His poem is called "An Idyll of Dandaloo."

Dandaloo's Past

During Australia's early colonial times (1788–1850), there was a plan for a village called Dandaloo. It was meant to be built where the Trangie-Melrose Road crosses the Bogan River. People even started dividing the land into blocks.

However, the plan for the village was stopped in 1895. Because of this, the area that was supposed to be a town is still mostly open fields today. You can still find a few houses there. There is also a church graveyard and an old, unused post office building.

Airfield During World War II

During the Second World War, Dandaloo played a small role. The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) built a special airfield nearby. This airfield was used as a backup for a larger training school. That school was located at RAAF Station Narromine.

The Dandaloo airfield was very simple. It had one long gravel runway. There were also eight hidden spots for planes. But there were no other permanent buildings. After the war, the land was returned to farming.

Dandaloo Today

In 2006, about 365 people lived in the Dandaloo area. The main jobs in Dandaloo are related to the land. These include agriculture (farming), forestry (working with trees), and fishing. This shows how important natural resources are to the community.
