Daniel Fernando Abugattás Majluf (born April 14, 1955 – died January 22, 2025) was a Peruvian businessman and politician. He was a member of the Alliance for Progress political party.
Abugattás served as a Congressman for the area of Lima from 2006 to 2016. Before joining the Alliance for Progress, he was part of the Peruvian Nationalist Party.
Early Life and Education
Daniel Abugattás was born in Arequipa, Peru, on April 14, 1955. He studied law at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru in Lima.
Later, he continued his studies in Mexico. From 1980 to 1981, he earned a master's degree in economic law. In 1982, he traveled to Osaka, Japan. There, he took a special course in quality management.
Professional Career
Before becoming a politician, Daniel Abugattás had a career in business. From 1980 to 1994, he worked for a company called Fabrica Moderna S.A. in Lima.
After that, from 1994 to 2006, he became the general director of Nielsen Peru. This company is known for its research and data analysis.
Political Journey
Daniel Abugattás began his political career in the 2006 general election. He was elected as a congressman for Lima. He ran on a joint list with the Peruvian Nationalist Party. After the election, he stayed with the Nationalist Party.
During the election campaign, Abugattás was a spokesperson for Ollanta Humala. Humala was running for president at the time. Abugattás later faced some challenges and was briefly replaced as spokesperson.
From 2007 to 2011, he was an important member of the Nationalist Party's political group. He also led the Commission for Production, Micro and Small Enterprises in Congress.
Ollanta Humala asked him to help organize the Nationalist Party. Abugattás worked hard and helped many new members join. He also opened party offices in many parts of Peru.
He was chosen by Parliament to lead a special investigation. This investigation was called "Petroaudios." He played a key role in finding out about acts of corruption. From 2010 to 2011, Abugattás was the main spokesperson for the Nationalist Party in Congress.
In the 2011 general election, Abugattás was re-elected as a congressman. Ollanta Humala and his party, Peru Wins, won the presidency. For the 2011-2012 term, Daniel Abugattás was elected President of the Congress.
In March 2016, he left the Nationalist Party. He disagreed with some decisions made by the party's leadership. Later, he joined the Alliance for Progress party. He tried to run for Congress again in the 2021 elections for Lima, but he was not elected.
