Daniel Chavarría (born November 23, 1933 – died April 6, 2018) was a famous writer and translator. He was from Uruguay but lived in Cuba for most of his life, starting in the 1960s. He was known for his exciting stories and his strong beliefs about making society better.

Life and Writing

Daniel Chavarría was born in a city called San José de Mayo in Uruguay.

In 1964, while he was living in Brazil, there was a big change in the government. Daniel Chavarría then moved to the Amazon rainforest to work with people looking for gold. After that, he moved to Cuba.

In Cuba, he started working as a translator and teacher. He taught Latin and Greek. Later, he began writing his own books. Daniel Chavarría always said he was a citizen of Uruguay and a writer from Cuba.

Chavarría's writing style was similar to other important Latin American writers, like Gabriel García Márquez. He said that when he was a kid, he loved reading adventure stories by Jules Verne, Emilio Salgari, and Alexandre Dumas. You can see their influence in his books. For example, his book Tango for a Torturer was inspired by Dumas's The Count of Monte Cristo.

Daniel Chavarría strongly supported the Cuban Revolution. His life and books showed his belief in a society where everyone is equal.

In 2010, Daniel Chavarría won a very important award in Cuba. It was called the National Prize for Literature. This award is given to the best writers in the country.

Chavarría passed away in Havana, Cuba, on April 6, 2018. He was 84 years old.
