Daniel Johnson Jr. (born July 11, 1995) is an American professional baseball player. He plays as an outfielder. He has played for teams like the Cleveland Indians and Baltimore Orioles in Major League Baseball (MLB). Currently, he is a free agent, meaning he can sign with any team.

Early Life and College Baseball

Daniel Johnson grew up in Vallejo, California. He went to Jesse M. Bethel High School. In his last year of high school (2013), he was a great hitter, batting .515.

He was not chosen in the 2013 Major League Baseball draft. So, he went to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College. In 2014, he hit .274 with two home runs. He also had 16 RBIs in 39 games.

After that, he moved to New Mexico State University. He played baseball for the Aggies team there. In 2015, he batted .305 with two home runs and 16 RBIs. In 2016, he had an amazing year. He hit .382 with 12 home runs and 50 RBIs. He also stole 29 bases in 57 games. Because of his great performance, he was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year.

Professional Baseball Career

Washington Nationals

The Washington Nationals picked Daniel Johnson in the fifth round of the 2016 Major League Baseball draft. In his first professional season in 2016, he played for the Auburn Doubledays. He hit .265 with one home run and 14 RBIs in 62 games. The Nationals believed he could become a strong player.

In 2017, Johnson played for the Hagerstown Suns. He quickly showed his power, hitting ten home runs by May. He also had a batting average above .300. His strong play earned him a spot on the South Atlantic League All-Star team.

Later in 2017, he was promoted to the Potomac Nationals. By July, he was ranked as the Nationals' tenth-best young player. He finished the 2017 season with a .298 batting average. He also hit 22 home runs, had 72 RBIs, and stole 22 bases. He played in 130 games that year. He was named the Nationals' best Minor League Player for 2017. In 2018, he played 89 games for the Harrisburg Senators. He hit .267 with six home runs and 31 RBIs, even though he dealt with some injuries.

Cleveland Indians / Guardians

On November 30, 2018, Johnson was traded to the Cleveland Indians. He started the 2019 season with the Akron RubberDucks. On May 25, 2019, he was moved up to the Columbus Clippers. In July of that year, he played in the 2019 All-Star Futures Game. Between the two teams, he played 123 games. He batted .290 with 19 home runs and 77 RBIs.

After the 2019 season, Johnson was added to the Indians' main roster. He made his Major League Baseball debut on July 25, 2020. In 2020, he had 12 chances to bat but did not get any hits or home runs. On July 18, 2021, Johnson hit his first career home run in MLB. It was a solo shot against Chris Bassitt.

On November 19, 2021, the Cleveland Guardians (the new name for the Indians) removed Johnson from their main roster. He then went to play for the Triple-A Columbus Clippers again. He started the 2022 season there. In 17 games, he hit .217 with 3 home runs and 11 RBIs.

New York Mets

On May 25, 2022, Johnson was traded to the New York Mets. He played 14 games for the Triple-A Syracuse Mets. He hit .136 with one home run and 6 RBIs. He was released by the Mets on July 24, 2022.

Washington Nationals (Second Time)

On July 29, 2022, Johnson signed a new contract with the Washington Nationals. He played 26 games for the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings. He hit .189 with one home run and eight RBIs. After the season, on November 10, he became a free agent again.

San Diego Padres

On February 23, 2023, Johnson signed a contract with the San Diego Padres. He played 126 games for two teams: the Double–A San Antonio Missions and Triple–A El Paso Chihuahuas. He batted .271 with 19 home runs, 73 RBIs, and 30 stolen bases. He became a free agent again on November 6.

Baltimore Orioles

On January 23, 2024, Johnson signed a contract with the Baltimore Orioles. He played 118 games for the Triple–A Norfolk Tides. He hit .259 with 21 home runs, 76 RBIs, and 17 stolen bases. On September 21, the Orioles added Johnson to their main team. He played in one game for Baltimore. On October 31, Johnson left the Orioles and became a free agent.
