Life and Music Journey

Daniel Licht grew up near Detroit. He went to the Roeper School and also studied music in Boston. Daniel started playing music when he was eight years old. His first instrument was the clarinet. Four years later, he began playing the guitar.

Early Career

While still in high school, Daniel started his music career. He played guitar with a small jazz band in local clubs. After high school, he went to Hampshire College in Massachusetts. There, he studied composition, jazz, and world music.

After college, Daniel moved to New York City. He became a well-known musician in the Lower East Side music scene. He traveled to places like Germany and the Netherlands. He composed music for theater and dance groups. He also created music for big companies like Mercedes Benz, Sony, and AT&T.

Moving to Film Music

Daniel then moved to Los Angeles. A friend from college, Christopher Young, suggested he try writing music for movies. His first big movie project was Children of the Night in 1991. The music he wrote for this film was even released as a soundtrack CD.

Daniel composed the music for every season of the TV show Dexter. He thought this was one of his most important projects.

Video Game Music

From 2012 to 2015, Daniel was the main composer for the Silent Hill video game series. He also created the music for the 2012 video game Dishonored. He worked on its 2016 sequel too. The game Dishonored: Death of the Outsider was released after he passed away. It was dedicated to his memory.

Daniel Licht passed away on August 2, 2017. He was 60 years old. He died from a type of cancer called sarcoma at his home in Topanga, California. His nephew, Jon, helped him with his work on Dexter, Dishonored, and Silent Hill.
