Darab (Persian: داراب) is an ancient and important city in Iran. It is located in the Fars province. Darab serves as the main city for both Darab County and its Central District.

Discovering Darab's Past

Darab is one of the oldest cities in all of Iran. Its long history is even mentioned in the famous Persian epic poem, the Shahname. This amazing story was written by the poet Ferdowsi.

How Darab Got Its Name

Legend says that the city was founded by Darius I. He was a powerful king from ancient Persia. Because of this, the city was once called Daráb-gerd. This means "Darius-town."

Ancient Structures and Art

Near Darab, you can find many old remains. One is called the Kalah i Daráb. This means "citabdel of Darius." It is made of circular earthworks built around a single rock.

Another cool monument is a huge bas-relief. This is a type of carving on a rock face. It shows the victory of Shapur I. He was a king of the Sasanian Empire. The carving shows him defeating the Roman emperor Valerian in 260 A.D.

City Design Through Time

An old historian named Hamza al-Isfahani wrote about Darab. He said the city was shaped like a triangle. A circular wall was built around the city in the 8th century. This wall was for defense. It was built by a governor of Fars province. The wall is about 1,900 meters wide.

For much of the Middle Ages, Darab was the capital of a large area. The city was known for its products. These included textiles, jasmine oil, and different mineral salts.
