Dardanup is a small town located in the beautiful South West region of Western Australia. It sits in the rich, green Ferguson Valley and is close to the Ferguson River.
About Dardanup
Dardanup is known for its lovely natural surroundings. The Ferguson Valley is a very fertile area, which means the soil is great for growing crops and supporting farms. The nearby Ferguson River adds to the beauty and helps the land stay green.
Early History
The first European person to settle in the Dardanup area was Thomas Little in 1852. He named his land Dardanup Park. The name "Dardanup" is thought to come from an Aboriginal Australian word called Dudingup. We don't know exactly what Dudingup means.
In 1893, work began on the local agricultural hall. This hall was a community building for farmers and local people. It was built by J. and H. Gibbs using strong jarrah wood and weatherboard. The hall officially opened in 1894.
By 1898, the population of the Dardanup area was 118 people. There were 81 males and 37 females living there at that time.
Thomas Little later gave some of his land to the Catholic Church. This helped a community grow in the area. In the 1920s, the government bought more land, and Dardanup was officially made a town in 1923.
Important People
James Mitchell was born into a farming family in Dardanup in 1866. He became a very important person in Western Australian politics.
He served as the premier of Western Australia, which is like the leader of the state government, from 1919 to 1924. He was premier again from 1930 to 1933.
Later, James Mitchell was appointed as the acting governor and then the governor of Western Australia from 1933 to 1951. He is the only person in Western Australian history to have been both the premier and the governor.
