Dariga Nazarbayeva (born 7 May 1963) is a businesswoman and politician from Kazakhstan. She is the daughter of Nursultan Nazarbayev, who was the President of Kazakhstan from 1990 to 2019.
Nazarbayeva has held many important roles in the Kazakh government. She was a member of the Mäjilis (the lower house of Parliament) at different times, from 2004 to 2007, 2012 to 2015, and 2021 to 2022. She also served as the Deputy Chairwoman of the Mäjilis from 2014 to 2015. After that, she became a Deputy Prime Minister.
Later, she joined the Kazakh Senate (the upper house of Parliament) from 2016 to 2020. From 2019 to 2020, she was the Chairwoman of the Senate. This happened right after her father stepped down as president. Many people thought she might become president herself because of her family connection and high positions. However, she was removed from her Senate role in 2020. She is known as one of the wealthiest women in Kazakhstan.

Early Life and Education
Dariga Nazarbayeva was born in Temirtau in 1963. She finished her high school education in Almaty in 1982. She studied history at Moscow State University from 1980 to 1983. She graduated from S. M. Kirov Kazakh State University in 1985. Later, she earned a degree in history from Moscow State University in 1991. In 1998, she earned a Ph.D. in political science.
Career in Media and Music
Nazarbayeva started her career in media in 1994. She became the vice president of the Television and Radio of Kazakhstan Republican Corporation. In 1995, the Khabar TV channel was created. This became the largest national television agency in Kazakhstan. She also helped manage other media companies, including radio stations and newspapers. By 1998, she became the President of Khabar.
Besides her work in media, Nazarbayeva is also a singer. She has performed Kazakh folk songs, Russian romances, and opera songs. She has given concerts in Moscow and Paris. In 2011, she performed at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. A film about her musical performances was released in 2012.
Political Journey
Leading the Asar Party (2003–2006)
In 2003, Dariga Nazarbayeva started her own political party called Asar. Many people joined the party quickly. In the 2004 elections, Asar did well, and Nazarbayeva became a member of the Mäjilis for the first time.
In 2006, the Asar party decided to join with another big political party called Otan (which later became Amanat). This party was led by her father, Nursultan Nazarbayev. After the merger, Nazarbayeva became a Deputy Chair of the Amanat party.
Time in Parliament (2004–2007, 2012–2015, 2021–2022)
Nazarbayeva was a member of the Mäjilis from 2004 to 2007. During this time, she led a group of deputies called Aimak. This group focused on helping regions develop and supporting local businesses.
She returned to the Mäjilis in 2012. She led the committee that focused on social and cultural development. In 2014, she was chosen to be the Deputy Chairwoman of the Mäjilis. She also became the leader of the Amanat party in Parliament. In 2015, she was appointed as a Deputy Prime Minister.
Nazarbayeva returned to the Mäjilis again in 2021 after the elections. She became a member of the Committee for Economic Reforms.
Member of the Senate (2016–2020)
In 2016, Nazarbayeva was appointed to the Senate. She became the head of the Senate's International Affairs, Defense, and Security Committee.
Chairwoman of the Senate
On 20 March 2019, her father, Nursultan Nazarbayev, stepped down as president. On the same day, Dariga Nazarbayeva was chosen to be the Chairwoman of the Senate. She took over this role from Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, who then became the acting president.
Many people thought this meant she was being prepared to become the next president of Kazakhstan. However, she was removed from her role as Senate Chairwoman by President Tokayev on 2 May 2020. This decision led to many discussions about political changes in Kazakhstan.

Personal Life
Family
Dariga Nazarbayeva was married to Rakhat Aliyev. They divorced in 2007. She has two sons, Nurali and Aisultan, and a daughter, Venera. She is also a grandmother.
Her son, Aisultan, passed away in London in 2020. Nazarbayeva shared that her family was very sad about the loss.
Wealth
In 2013, Forbes Magazine estimated her wealth to be about $595 million. Her wealth comes from her involvement in various companies. These include media companies like Europe Plus Kazakhstan JSC and NTK, and other businesses like AlmaInvestHolding. She also founded Kazakhstan's main TV network, Khabar Agency.
In 2018, information from the Panama Papers showed that Nazarbayeva was linked to an offshore company in the British Virgin Islands. Her son, Nurali, was also mentioned in these papers as having offshore companies. It was also suggested that she might own 221B Baker Street in London, a famous property known as the fictional address of Sherlock Holmes.
In 2020, a British court looked into the ownership of some properties worth a lot of money. The court identified Nazarbayeva and her son Nurali as the owners. However, a British court later ruled that the claims against them were not strong enough, and the case was closed.
