Karim Qajymqanuly Massimov (Kazakh: Кәрім Қажымқанұлы Мәсімов, Kärım Qajymqanūly Mäsımov; born 15 June 1965) is a well-known Kazakh politician. He served as the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan two times: first from 2007 to 2012, and then again from 2014 to 2016. He also held important roles like Deputy Prime Minister and chairman of the National Security Committee.

Early Life and Education
Karim Massimov was born in Tselinograd (now Astana), Kazakhstan. His family has roots from the Tajik and Uyghur communities. His father, Qazhymqan Massimov, held various leadership positions in different organizations.
Learning and Studies
Karim Massimov finished the Republican Physics and Mathematics Boarding School in 1982. He studied Arabic at the People's Friendship University of Russia from 1985 to 1988. He also learned Chinese at the Beijing Institute of Language.
He continued his studies at the Alma-Ata Institute of National Economy. In 1999, he earned a special degree called a doctoral degree from a university in Moscow. His studies focused on how industries in Kazakhstan could grow and solve problems.
Career in Government
Karim Massimov began his government career in 1991 at the Ministry of Labour. He later became the Minister of Transport and Communications in 2000. In 2001, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan. He served in this role again in 2006.
Working with Other Countries
Massimov played a part in Kazakhstan's relationships with other countries.
China
He is seen as an expert on China. Kazakhstan and China work closely, especially on energy resources. Massimov visited Beijing in 2006 to strengthen cooperation between the two nations. They signed several agreements during his visit.
Israel
In 2006, Massimov met with Israeli leaders in Jerusalem. He shared that Kazakhstan, as a moderate Muslim state, wanted to be involved in the Middle East. They discussed economic ties and even planned to create agriculture schools in both countries.
Prime Minister of Kazakhstan
First Time as Prime Minister

In January 2007, President Nursultan Nazarbayev chose Karim Massimov to be the new Prime Minister. The Parliament agreed with this choice.
His government faced big challenges during the worldwide Great Recession. To help the economy, the National Bank of Kazakhstan changed the value of the Kazakhstani tenge (Kazakhstan's money). Massimov worked to keep prices stable. His government's efforts helped Kazakhstan's economy grow. The country's wealth per person almost doubled between 2008 and 2012.
During this time, the first part of Kazakhstan's Unified National Healthcare System was put into place. This system aimed to improve healthcare for everyone.
In September 2012, Massimov stepped down as Prime Minister. President Nazarbayev said that Massimov had done a great job during a difficult time.
Second Time as Prime Minister

Karim Massimov was appointed Prime Minister again in April 2014. He took over during more economic challenges, including changes in the value of the tenge and falling oil prices.
He led the "100 Concrete Steps" plan, which was a big modernization program for the country. This plan aimed to make Kazakhstan more modern and efficient.
Massimov was also involved in preparing for the Expo 2017 event in Kazakhstan. He visited the construction sites to make sure everything was on track.
His government also brought in a change to a 12-year education system. This was a big step for schools in Kazakhstan. He served as Prime Minister until September 2016.
After Being Prime Minister

After his time as Prime Minister, Karim Massimov became the chairman of the National Security Committee (NSC) in September 2016. He held this important position until January 2022, when he was dismissed by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
Personal Life
Karim Massimov is a citizen of Kazakhstan and is of Uyghur background. He can speak several languages, including Kazakh, Russian, Chinese, English, and Arabic. He is married and has three children. He enjoys reading, skiing, and playing golf.
Interest in Martial Arts
Massimov has a strong interest in martial arts, especially Muay Thai. He was the President of the Federation of Amateur Muaythai of Asia (FAMA) in 2010. He also became the Vice President of the International Federation of Muaythai Amateurs (IFMA). He believes that sports like Muay Thai bring athletes together from all over the world.
