Darko Lazović's Football Journey
Starting Out at Borac Čačak
Darko Lazović started playing football at a very young age. He joined the youth academy of FK Borac Čačak when he was just six years old. Even as a junior player, scouts from other teams noticed his skills.
He made his first professional appearance for Borac on 2 March 2008. This was in a league match against Hajduk Kula. A few weeks later, on 22 March 2008, he scored his first goal for the team. This happened during a Serbian Superliga match against Vojvodina.
In 2009, Darko even trained with the famous English club Tottenham Hotspur F.C. for a few days. People thought he might move there, but a contract was never signed. Instead, another Serbian club, Red Star Belgrade, became interested in him.
Shining at Red Star Belgrade
On 22 June 2009, when Darko was 18, he moved to Red Star Belgrade. He signed a four-year contract with them. He missed the start of the season because of an injury.
Darko made his debut for Red Star on 12 September 2009. He came into the game as a substitute. He scored his first two goals for Red Star on 23 September 2009 in a Serbian Cup match. Red Star won that game 6–1.
He started playing much more when coach Robert Prosinečki arrived. Darko was even named the best young player in the Serbian Superliga. He played a big part in Red Star's journey in the UEFA Europa League qualifying games in 2011–12.
In 2012, Darko scored a goal against Red Star's biggest rival, Partizan, in the semi-final of the 2011–12 Serbian Cup. Red Star won that game and went on to win the Serbian Cup that year! On 4 July 2012, he signed a new three-year contract.
Even with many coaching changes, Darko remained a key player for Red Star. However, on 18 May 2013, he got a serious knee injury during a match against Partizan. This injury kept him out of the game for the rest of the season.
After eight months of recovery, Darko returned to play on 22 February 2014. He quickly made an assist in his first game back. On 12 April 2014, he scored his first ever hat-trick (three goals in one game) against Čukarički.
At the end of that season, Darko won his first league championship with Red Star. They won after a big game in front of 55,000 fans! Later, Darko became the new captain of Red Star Belgrade.
On 14 January 2015, it was announced that Darko would leave Red Star after six years. He would join an Italian club called Genoa. In his last season with Red Star, he was the team's top scorer with 10 goals. His final game for Red Star was on 24 May 2015.
