Darran Mountains facts for kids
The Darran Mountains are a really cool mountain range in New Zealand. They are part of Fiordland National Park, which is the biggest national park in the country! These mountains are home to the park's highest peak, Mount Tūtoko, which stands tall at 2,723 metres (8,934 ft).
Where are the Darran Mountains?
The Darran Mountains are located in the northern part of Fiordland National Park. To their west, you'll find the famous Milford Sound (also known as Piopiotahi) and the Cleddau River valley. To the east, there's the wide valley of the Hollyford River.
The mountains are also bordered by the Tasman Sea to the north. To the south, they meet the Homer Saddle, which separates them from the Wick Mountains. The Homer Tunnel, a well-known tunnel, goes right under the southwestern edge of the Darran Mountains.
Amazing Peaks and Beautiful Waters
Besides Mount Tūtoko, the Darran Mountains have other impressive peaks. These include Mount Madeline, which is 2,536 metres (8,320 ft) high, and Mount Christina, standing at 2,474 metres (8,117 ft).
You'll find many sparkling lakes and small mountain lakes called tarns scattered throughout the range. Some of the biggest ones are Lake Adelaide and Lake Marian. Several rivers also start their journey in these mountains. These include the Tūtoko, Kaipo, and Bowen River.
The Bowen River is quite special. Near where it flows into Milford Sound, it creates one of the area's most famous natural sights: the beautiful Bowen Falls.
How the Mountains Got Their Name
The Darran Mountains were named a long time ago by a person named Captain J. Stokes. He was an early surveyor, which means he was someone who mapped out the land. He was working on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand when he gave the mountains their name.
