Darrell Bay is a small bay located on the northeast side of Howe Sound in British Columbia, Canada. It's also an unincorporated settlement, meaning it's a community that isn't officially governed as a town or city. This area is important because it has a ferry terminal that connects to other places.
Darrell Bay is right next to Shannon Falls Provincial Park. This park is famous for its beautiful waterfalls. The bay is also very close to BC Highway 99, which is also known as the Sea to Sky Highway.
A Name Change Story
Before 1949, this bay was known as Shannon Bay. It was named after William Shannon, who was one of the first people to own land in this area. He also gave his name to the nearby Shannon Falls.
However, the name of the bay changed in 1949. This happened because of a request from Darrell Burgess. He owned a fishing camp right there at the bay. Even though the area was sometimes called Burgess Camp, the bay itself was still known as Shannon Bay. The Hydrographic Service, which maps and names bodies of water, decided to rename it Darrell Bay after Darrell Burgess.
The Darrell Bay Ferry
The Darrell Bay Ferry is super important for people living in and visiting the area. It's the only way to get to and from Woodfibre. Woodfibre is a community located directly across Howe Sound from Darrell Bay.
Woodfibre used to be a town with a big pulp mill, but now it's a quiet place where people go to relax or retire. The ferry provides the main link for residents and visitors to travel between Woodfibre and the mainland.
