Darren Lighty is an American music producer and songwriter. He was born on April 6, 1969, in Paterson, New Jersey. He is known for his work in hip hop and R&B music.
Early Career and The Flex
Darren Lighty began his music journey in a group called The Flex. His brother, Cliff Lighty, and Eric Williams were also part of this group. They were discovered by a famous hip hop producer named Marley Marl.
Marley Marl had The Flex sing the catchy parts, called "hooks," on songs he produced. They worked with artists like LL Cool J, Heavy D. & the Boyz, Craig G, and Intelligent Hoodlum. Even though the group did not record an album together, they made a name for themselves.
After The Flex broke up, Darren and Cliff Lighty continued to work as songwriters and musicians. Eric Williams, the third member, later joined the popular R&B group Blackstreet.
Working as a Producer
In the early 2000s, Darren Lighty started working closely with producer Eddie F.. They created several songs together. Lighty also teamed up with Kay Gee, a member of the group Naughty by Nature, to produce and write music.
Darren Lighty has worked with many well-known artists. These include Aaliyah, Donell Jones, Jaheim, Next, Luther Vandross, Queen Latifah, Nas, and Mario. His work has helped shape many popular songs in hip hop and R&B.
