Dave Johnson was born in Morgan City, Louisiana. He grew up loving basketball. His journey to becoming a professional player started early.
College Career at Syracuse
Dave went to Syracuse University for college. He played for the Syracuse Orange team from 1988 to 1992. During his junior and senior years, he became a really good scorer. He played as a small forward, which is a position known for scoring points and helping with rebounds.
In 1991, he was named to the Second-team All-Big East. This meant he was one of the best players in his college conference. The next year, in 1992, he made the First-team All-Big East, showing how much he had improved.
Getting Ready for the NBA
After his senior year, Dave took part in a special event called the Orlando Classic. This was a camp and tournament for players hoping to join the NBA. Dave really stood out there.
He had the highest vertical leap among all the players, jumping 34 inches high! He was also the top scorer in the tournament, averaging 19 points per game. On top of that, he won the Slam Dunk Contest. These achievements showed everyone he was ready for the big leagues.
His Time in the NBA
Because of his great performance, the Portland Trail Blazers chose Dave in the 1992 NBA draft. He was the 26th player picked overall. He played one season with the Trail Blazers.
After that, he joined the Chicago Bulls for his second and final NBA season. He played 17 games for the Bulls during the 1993–94 season.

Even though his NBA career was short, Dave Johnson continued to play professional basketball for many years. He played for different teams in various leagues, both in the U.S. and in other countries.
He played in Spain for CB Zaragoza, in France for JDA Dijon Basket, and in Italy for Partenope Napoli Basket. He also played in Puerto Rico for the Cangrejeros de Santurce and Mets de Guaynabo. In the U.S., he played for teams like the Grand Rapids Mackers, Rapid City Thrillers, Florida Beachdogs, Rockford Lightning, and Idaho Stampede. He played professionally until 2001.
