David Abner Jr. (born November 25, 1860 – died July 21, 1928) was an important American educator. He made history as the first president of two colleges: Guadalupe College and later Conroe College.
Early Life and Education
David Abner Jr. was born on November 25, 1860, in Upshur County, Texas. His parents were David Abner and Louisa Abner. His family was not free until the Emancipation Proclamation made slavery illegal. After this, his father became a leader in Texas politics. He helped write the state's constitution and served in the state legislature.
In 1870, David Jr.'s family moved to Marshall, Texas. There, he attended Wiley University. He later studied at Straight University in New Orleans. In 1877, he went to Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee.
David Abner Jr. then enrolled at Bishop College in 1881. He graduated in 1884. This was a big achievement, as he was the first African American to graduate from a college in Texas. After graduating, he became a professor at Bishop College.
A Leader in Education
In 1883, David Abner Jr. was chosen as a delegate for the National Convention of Colored Men. This group worked to improve the lives of African Americans. In 1884, he became a key leader for the Baptist State Convention of Texas. He also edited the convention's newspaper, which was first called the Baptist Journal and later the Baptist Pilot.
In 1884, Guadalupe College was founded. This school was created mainly by William B. Ball. The college opened its doors in 1887, and David Abner Jr. was chosen as its first president. He led Guadalupe College until 1905.
Later, a new college called Conroe College was started. In 1906, David Abner Jr. was elected as its first president. He continued his work in education, leading this new institution.
Family Life
David Abner Jr. married Ella M. Wheeler. They had two children together. He passed away on August 21, 1928, in Houston, Texas.
