Club Career
Early Days in Ghana
David Accam did not join a football club until he was 12 years old. Before that, he played football with his friends on gravel fields in Accra, Ghana. A scout from the Right to Dream Academy saw him playing there. David then spent four years training at this academy.
Playing in England
In 2008, David received a special scholarship to study at Hartpury College in England. While studying, he also played for different football teams in the lower leagues of England.
He joined the English club Ledbury Town in December 2009 and scored a goal in his very first game. After that, he played for Evesham United during the 2010–11 season. He also played for the reserve team of Forest Green Rovers. However, David was in England on a student visa. This meant he could not play for the main team of Forest Green Rovers or any other club in a higher division.
After his time at Evesham United, David took part in a competition called "The Chance" by Nike. He was one of eight winners who got to train with the Nike Football Academy for the 2011–2012 season.
Success in Sweden
In March 2012, David Accam moved to Sweden and joined Östersund, a team in the Swedish third division. The team's manager, Graham Potter, had already signed two other Ghanaian players who studied with David in England. After seeing David play at the Nike Academy, he brought him to Sweden.
David quickly became a very successful player for Östersund. Many clubs from the top Swedish league, Allsvenskan, became interested in signing him.
In August 2012, David was signed by Helsingborg, an Allsvenskan club. The transfer fee was 2 million SEK, which was the highest amount ever paid for a player from the Swedish third division. He played for Helsingborg for three seasons, scoring 30 goals in 62 games.
After scoring 17 goals in 26 games in his last season, David announced he would leave Helsingborg to find new opportunities. Many big clubs from different countries were interested in him.
Major League Soccer (MLS) in the USA
On December 19, 2014, David Accam signed with Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States. He was signed as a "designated player," which means he was one of the team's most important players.
After three seasons with Chicago, David was traded to Philadelphia Union on January 19, 2018. In his first year with Philadelphia, he had some injuries and scored only one goal. However, in his second season, he played much better, scoring 4 goals and helping with 2 others in 11 games.
On May 8, 2019, he was traded again, this time to Columbus Crew SC. A week later, it was announced that David would join Nashville SC starting January 1, 2020, but he would finish the 2019 season with Columbus Crew.
After the 2021 season, his contract with Nashville ended, and he became a free agent.
Return to Sweden and Finland
On January 28, 2021, David Accam returned to Sweden and joined Hammarby IF on a loan for 12 months. He played his first game for them on April 1 in a cup match, where he came on as a substitute and scored a goal.
On May 30, 2021, David won the 2020–21 Svenska Cupen with Hammarby IF. They won the final against BK Häcken in a penalty shootout, and David scored his penalty kick. At the end of the year, his loan ended, and he left the club.
In August 2022, David signed a four-month contract with Inter Turku, a team in Finland.
International Career
David Accam was first called to play for the Ghana national team on March 24, 2013, for a World Cup qualification game. He was a substitute but did not play in that match.
In May 2014, David was named in a group of 26 players for the 2014 World Cup by Ghana's manager. However, on June 2, 2014, he was not chosen for the final World Cup team. David said he was disappointed about this.
On November 15, 2014, David made his first official game for Ghana. It was a game against Uganda in a qualifier for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. He came into the game as a substitute in the 67th minute. He was also part of Ghana's team for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
Personal Life
David Accam received his U.S. green card in October 2015. This allowed him to be counted as a local player for MLS teams.
David is a big fan of the English football club Arsenal. He is also a devout Christian. On January 3, 2019, he married Florence Dadson, who is also a Ghanaian international women's footballer. They got married in Cape Coast, Ghana.
