David Charles Howard Bale (born September 2, 1941 – died December 30, 2003) was an English businessman and a strong supporter of the environment and animal rights. He was the father of famous actor Christian Bale and was married to Gloria Steinem, a well-known writer and activist.
Early Life and Background
David Bale was born in South Africa. His parents were from England. His father, Philip Bale, was a pilot for the Royal Air Force.
David grew up in different places, including England, Egypt, and the Channel Islands. As an adult, he worked as a commercial pilot. He also owned an airline in England that flew people short distances. Later, he started businesses selling imported jeans and skateboards.
Career and Activism
David Bale was very active in protecting the environment and animal rights. He believed strongly in these causes.
He was a board member for important groups like The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. This fund works to protect gorillas. He also worked with the Ark Trust, which later became part of the Humane Society of the United States. This group helps animals.
David also served on the board of World Education, Inc. This is an international non-profit group. It focuses on improving education around the world.
Personal Life
David Bale was married three times. He had a daughter named Erin from his first marriage. From his second marriage, he had three more children: Louise, Sharon, and Christian. Christian later became a well-known actor.
On September 3, 2000, David Bale married Gloria Steinem. She is a famous writer, journalist, and activist for women's rights. Their wedding was a private event in Oklahoma. It took place at the home of Gloria's friend, Wilma Mankiller. Wilma was the first female Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation.
David was dealing with some immigration matters at the time. However, both he and Gloria said that his immigration status was not the reason for their marriage.
Gloria Steinem had often shared her thoughts on marriage. She explained that marriage laws in the United States had changed a lot. She felt that earlier laws were unfair to women. But by the time she married David, the laws had become much more equal. This made it possible to have a marriage where both partners had equal rights.
Death
