David Beaton of Creich facts for kids
David Beaton of Creich (died 1579) was an important Scottish nobleman and landowner. He lived during a time when Scotland was ruled by kings and queens.
Who Was David Beaton?
David Beaton was the son of Robert Beaton of Creich and Jeanne de la Rainville. His mother, Jeanne, was from France and worked for Mary of Guise, who was the Queen Regent of Scotland (meaning she ruled for her young daughter, Mary, Queen of Scots).
The Beaton family lived in a place called Creich Castle. They also had a special job: they were the traditional keepers of Falkland Palace. This meant they were in charge of looking after the palace for the royal family.
David had two sisters who were also connected to the royal court. His sister, Mary Beaton, was a close friend and companion to Mary, Queen of Scots. She was one of the famous "Four Marys." Another sister, Lucrece, also grew up in the queen's household.
When David Beaton passed away in 1579, he did not have a son to take over his duties. So, his brother, James Beaton, became the new keeper of Falkland Palace.
Later, in 1602, James Beaton and his son, also named David Beaton, decided to give up their role as keepers of Falkland Palace. They gave this responsibility, along with some of their lands, back to the crown (the king). In return, they received other lands and grazing rights on the Lomond Hills.
David Beaton's Family
