Robert Beaton of Creich was an important Scottish nobleman who lived in the 1500s. He was a trusted helper and manager for Mary, Queen of Scots, serving as her Master of Household. This meant he helped run her royal homes.

Robert Beaton was the son of John Beaton of Creich, who looked after Falkland Palace. His mother was Janet Hay. In 1548, Robert traveled to France with the young Mary, Queen of Scots.

His family homes in Scotland included Creich Castle and a place called Dunbog. Robert Beaton had many important connections through his sisters and aunts.

  • Another sister, Margaret Beaton, married Arthur Forbes. She was known as "Lady Reres" and was also a friend and helper to Queen Mary. Rires Castle was in Kilconquhar, Fife.
  • His sister, Grisel Beaton, married William Scott. Later, in 1552, she married Andrew Murray of Blackbarony. She was the mother of Gideon Murray.

In October 1560, Robert Beaton and Alexander Forrester were in Paris. They helped carry important letters from the English ambassador to William Cecil in London. These letters were about important political matters.

Robert Beaton of Creich passed away in May 1567. He made his will with his wife, Jeanne de la Rainville, at Falkland Palace.

Marriage and Children

In May 1539, Robert Beaton married Jeanne de la Rainville. She was a French lady-in-waiting to Mary of Guise, who was Mary, Queen of Scots' mother. Jeanne's name was also sometimes written as "Jehanne Gresmor." Both Jeanne and her mother were part of Mary of Guise's household.

King James V gave Jeanne a special gift when she married. He bought her a beautiful red velvet dress and a white velvet skirt. Their wedding was held in St Andrews. To decorate the wedding place, twelve large tapestries showing the story of Aeneas were brought from Edinburgh.

Jeanne Delareynveil passed away in 1576 at Dunbog. Robert and Jeanne had several children:
