Elizabeth Bethune facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Elizabeth Bethune, also known as Beaton (who passed away after 1581), was an important woman in Scottish history. She had a daughter, Lady Jean Stewart, with James V of Scotland, who was the King of Scotland. Their daughter, Jean, later married Archibald Campbell, 5th Earl of Argyll.

Elizabeth's Family Background

Elizabeth was the daughter of Sir David Beaton of Creich. Her father was a nephew of James Beaton, who was an important church leader known as the Archbishop of St Andrews. Sir David Beaton was also the Keeper of Falkland Palace, which means he was in charge of looking after this royal home.

Jean Stewart's Early Life

Elizabeth's daughter, Jean Stewart, was very young when she was brought up in the home of Mary of Guise. Mary of Guise was the Queen of Scotland, as she was married to King James V. Jean also spent a short time in the nursery with her half-brother, Prince James, the Duke of Rothesay. He was the infant son of King James V.

Elizabeth's Marriages

Elizabeth Bethune was married twice during her life.

First Marriage

Her first marriage was to John Stewart, 4th Lord Innermeath. With John, Elizabeth had two sons: James Stewart, 5th Lord Innermeath and a poet named John Stewart of Baldynneis. In May 1544, Elizabeth and her husband John were given lands in a place called Inverkeilor.

Second Marriage and Later Challenges

In 1572, Elizabeth married for a second time to James Gray. He was the son of Patrick Gray, 4th Lord Gray. Later, in 1578, a disagreement arose involving James Gray and Elizabeth's niece, Isobel Beaton. This led to a big conflict, including attacks on Redcastle in Angus, and several court cases. Elizabeth eventually got a divorce in 1581.
