John Beaton of Creich facts for kids
John Beaton of Creich was a Scottish landowner and a helper at the royal court, born in 1495. His family name was sometimes spelled "Bethune" or "Betoun."
John's father, David Beaton, was an important official called the treasurer for King James IV. His mother was Jean Duddingston. John Beaton lived at Creich Castle.
John Beaton was in charge of Falkland Palace, a royal home. His sister, Elizabeth Beaton, was a close companion of King James V. Another sister, Janet Beaton, married James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Arran.
In 1530, John Beaton bought land in a place called Dunbog from the Earl of Rothes.
Family Life and Children
John Beaton married Janet Hay. Her father, John Hay, was a leader in the city of Dundee. John and Janet had several children:
- Janet Beaton (born around 1519, died 1569)
- Robert Beaton of Creich (died 1567)
- Christian Beaton, who married Michael Balfour of Burleigh
- Margaret Beaton, who married Arthur Forbes of Reres. She was a companion to Mary, Queen of Scots, and was known as "Lady Reres."
- Grisel Beaton, who married William Scott and later Andrew Murray. She was the mother of Walter Scott, 4th Baron of Buccleuch, Janet Scott, Lady Ferniehirst, and Gideon Murray.
