Early Life and Family Roots
Walter Scott was the oldest son of Sir William Scott of Kirkurd. His sister was named Jean Scott, Lady Ferniehirst. Walter became the head of his family after his grandfather, Walter Scott, 3rd of Buccleuch, passed away in 1552. Walter was only three years old at the time. His uncle, Walter Scott of Goldielands, helped lead the Scott family while Walter was too young. His mother was Grisel Betoun from Creich.
Walter Scott's Role in Scotland
Walter Scott lived during a time when different families and groups in Scotland often had conflicts. He played a big part in trying to bring peace and also in some of the battles.
Trying to End Family Feuds
In 1565, the Scott family tried to make peace with another family. This other family had been involved in the death of Walter's father. They planned for family members to marry each other to end the long-standing disagreements. Even though these specific marriages didn't happen right away, the idea helped set the stage for his sister's marriage later on.
Supporting Mary, Queen of Scots
In 1566, Queen Mary chose Walter Scott to be the captain of Newark Castle, Selkirkshire. He showed his loyalty by bringing over 3,000 men to support her.
Border Conflicts and Branxholme Castle
In 1570, Walter Scott knew that the leader of Scotland, Regent Moray, had been killed. He used this moment to raid the English side of the Border. In return, English forces, led by the Earl of Sussex and Lord Scrope, destroyed his home, Branxholme Castle. But Walter quickly rebuilt his castle the very next year.
A Sister's Marriage for Peace
In 1569, Walter's sister Jean married Sir Thomas Kerr. This marriage helped to bridge the old feud between their families. A payment was agreed upon as part of the marriage, but not all of it was paid during Walter's lifetime.
The Stirling Raid
Walter Scott was a main leader in a raid on Stirling on September 4, 1571. During this attack, they tried to capture the Scottish leader, Regent Lennox. Regent Lennox was killed during the fighting. Walter tried to save his relative, Regent Morton, whom others also wanted to harm. During the retreat, Walter was captured by Morton and held for some time at Doune Castle.
Later Responsibilities and Death
In December 1573, Walter Scott was given more important roles. He became the Keeper and Captain of the royal Newark Castle. He also became the Baillie and Chamberlain of Ettrick Forest, which meant he managed land and collected money for the king.
Walter Scott passed away at Branxholme Castle on April 17, 1574.
