David Rhys George Best Cotterill (born 4 December 1987) is a Welsh former footballer. He played as a winger, which is a player who mostly plays on the sides of the field.
David Cotterill was born in Cardiff, Wales. He started his football journey at Bristol City. Later, he played for several other clubs, including Premier League team Wigan Athletic, Sheffield United, and Swansea City. He also had spells at Portsmouth, Barnsley, and Doncaster Rovers. His last major club was Birmingham City. After leaving Birmingham, he played for ATK in India. In 2020, he returned to play in Wales for Barry Town United and Newtown.
Cotterill also proudly represented Wales in international matches. He played 24 times for his country between 2005 and 2018, scoring two goals. He was part of the Welsh team that reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament.

Club Career Highlights

Starting at Bristol City
Cotterill began his professional career at Bristol City. He made his first appearance as a substitute on 30 October 2004. During the 2005–06 season, he played 57 games and scored seven goals. His great performance earned him the Young Player of the Season award for Bristol City.
Time at Wigan Athletic
On 31 August 2006, Cotterill joined Premier League team Wigan Athletic. He signed a three-year deal for £2 million. He scored his first goal for Wigan against West Ham United on 6 December 2006. Even though he scored two goals in 24 games, he found it hard to get a regular spot in the first team.
Moving to Sheffield United
To get more playing time, Cotterill joined Championship side Sheffield United on loan in February 2008. He played 16 games during his loan spell. He then signed a permanent deal with Sheffield United in July 2008. He scored his first goal for the Blades in March 2009 against Birmingham City. He ended that season with four goals.
Playing for Swansea City
In November 2009, Cotterill moved to Swansea City on a loan deal. He later made the move permanent for a club record fee of £600,000. He scored his first goal for Swansea in an FA Cup match against Leicester City in January 2010. He scored three more goals in the 2009–10 season. In February 2011, he went on loan to Portsmouth and scored his first goal for them against Ipswich Town.
Short Spell at Barnsley
Cotterill signed with Barnsley on 16 February 2012 as a free agent. He scored one goal for the club against Peterborough United in March 2012. After playing 11 games, he left Barnsley at the end of the 2011–12 season.
Success at Doncaster Rovers
On 27 June 2012, Cotterill joined Doncaster Rovers on a two-year deal. He scored a fantastic long-range goal in his league debut for Doncaster against Walsall. He scored 10 goals in 49 games during the 2012–13 season. His excellent performance led to him being named in the PFA Team of the Year for League One.
Time at Birmingham City

Cotterill signed a two-year contract with Birmingham City in 2014. He wanted to be closer to his family in Wales. He made his debut on 12 August in a League Cup win. He scored his first goal for Birmingham on 27 September against Fulham with a great shot from 25 yards. He became a regular player and finished his first season with 9 goals in 45 games. His manager, Gary Rowett, noted his ability to still play well and help the team even on a tough day. In January 2017, Cotterill went on loan to Bristol City, the club where he started his career. He played 13 games and scored twice. His contract with Birmingham ended in December 2017.
Playing in India
In January 2018, Cotterill joined Indian Super League club ATK. He played three games for the club before returning to the UK.
Return to Welsh Football
In January 2020, Cotterill came out of retirement to play for Cymru Premier side Barry Town United. He left Barry Town in June 2021. In July 2021, he signed for another Cymru Premier team, Newtown.
International Career for Wales
David Cotterill played for Wales at different age levels. He played three times for the under-19 team, scoring once. For the under-21s, he scored four goals in nine appearances.
He also played for the senior Welsh team 24 times. His first game was on 12 October 2005, as a substitute in a 2–0 win against Azerbaijan. On 11 August 2010, Cotterill scored his first international goal in a 5–1 friendly win against Luxembourg. His second goal came on 13 October 2014, in a 2–1 win over Cyprus during UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying. He was part of the Wales squad that reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament in France, which was a huge achievement for Wales.

Personal Life
David Cotterill was born in Cardiff, Wales. He has two children. When he signed for Swansea City in 2010, he shared that he had received threats from fans of Cardiff City. This happened after he scored a penalty against them while playing for Sheffield United.
David Cotterill is the cousin of Swansea City midfielder Joel Cotterill, who also plays for Wales youth teams.
