David Rhys George Best Cotterill (born 4 December 1987) is a Welsh former footballer. He played as a winger, which is a player who focuses on attacking from the sides of the field.

David Cotterill was born in Cardiff, Wales. He started his football journey at Bristol City. Later, he joined Premier League team Wigan Athletic. After two seasons there, he moved to Sheffield United, first on loan and then permanently. He then played for Swansea City in his home country, Wales. He also had loan spells at Portsmouth and then joined Barnsley.

Cotterill spent two seasons with Doncaster Rovers before moving to Birmingham City. He also played on loan for Bristol City again. In 2018, he joined ATK in the Indian Super League. In 2020, Cotterill returned to football after a short break. He played for Barry Town United and Newtown in the Cymru Premier league.

David Cotterill also represented his country, Wales. He played for the senior national team 24 times between 2005 and 2018, scoring two goals. He was part of the Welsh squad that reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament.

Club Career Highlights

Starting at Bristol City

Cotterill began his professional career at Bristol City. He made his first appearance as a substitute on 30 October 2004. During the 2005–06 season, he played 57 games and scored seven goals. His good performance earned him the Young Player of the Season award for Bristol City.

Time with Wigan Athletic

On 31 August 2006, Cotterill joined Premier League club Wigan Athletic. He signed a three-year deal for £2 million. He scored his first goal for Wigan against West Ham United on 6 December 2006. Even though he scored two goals in 24 games for Wigan, he found it hard to become a regular starter.

Playing for Sheffield United

To get more playing time, Cotterill joined Championship team Sheffield United on loan in February 2008. He played 16 games during this loan period. He then signed a permanent deal with Sheffield United in July 2008. He scored his first goal for the club in March, from a penalty kick. He finished that season with four goals.

Moving to Swansea City

Cotterill moved to Swansea City on loan in November 2009. He scored his first goal for Swansea in an FA Cup match in January 2010. After his loan, the move became permanent. He scored three more goals in the 2009–10 season. In February 2011, Cotterill went on loan to Portsmouth and scored one goal for them.

In January 2012, Cotterill left Swansea City. He had not played any games for them during the 2011–12 season.

Short Spell at Barnsley

Cotterill signed with Barnsley in February 2012. He scored one goal for the club in March 2012. After making eleven appearances, he left Barnsley when his short contract ended.

Success with Doncaster Rovers

On 27 June 2012, Cotterill joined Doncaster Rovers on a two-year deal. He scored a long-range goal in his league debut for Doncaster. He scored ten goals in 49 games during the 2012–13 season. He was also named in the PFA Team of the Year for League One, which means he was one of the best players in the league that season.

After leaving Doncaster, Cotterill signed a two-year contract with Birmingham City in 2014. He wanted to be closer to his family in Wales. He quickly became a regular player. He scored his first goal for Birmingham City in September 2014. In the next game, he scored again and helped set up two other goals. He finished his first season with 9 goals in 45 games. His manager, Gary Rowett, praised his ability to still play well even on a difficult day. In 2015, he signed a two-year extension to his contract.

He continued to play regularly until he got a hamstring injury in October. He also had a knee injury in November. These injuries kept him out of many games. In January 2017, Cotterill went on loan to Bristol City, the club where he started his career. He played 13 games and scored two goals there. His contract with Birmingham City ended in December 2017.

Playing in India

In January 2018, Cotterill joined Indian Super League club ATK. He played three games for the club before returning to the UK.

Return to Welsh Football

In January 2020, Cotterill came out of retirement to play part-time for Cymru Premier team Barry Town United. He left Barry Town in June 2021. In July 2021, Cotterill signed for another Cymru Premier team, Newtown.

International Career for Wales

David Cotterill played for the Wales under-19 team three times, scoring once. He also played for the Wales under-21 team nine times, scoring four goals.

He played for the senior Welsh team 24 times. His first game was on 12 October 2005. He came on as a substitute in a 2–0 win against Azerbaijan.

On 11 August 2010, Cotterill scored his first international goal. It was in a 5–1 friendly win against Luxembourg. His second goal for Wales came on 13 October 2014, in a 2–1 win against Cyprus. He was part of the Wales squad that reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament in France. This was a big achievement for Wales, as it was their first major tournament since the 1958 FIFA World Cup.

Personal Life

David Cotterill was born in Cardiff, Wales. He has two children. His cousin, Joel Cotterill, is also a footballer who plays for Swansea City and for Wales youth teams.
