David Alexander Cospatrick Douglas-Home, known as the 15th Earl of Home, was a British banker and politician. He was a member of the House of Lords, which is part of the UK Parliament. He served as a Conservative politician from 1996 until he passed away in 2022.
Early Life and Education
David Douglas-Home was born in London on November 20, 1943. He was the only son of Sir Alec Douglas-Home, who was the 14th Earl of Home and later became the British prime minister. His mother was Elizabeth Alington.
David went to Ludgrove School, Eton College, and then Christ Church, Oxford for his education. In 1963, his father gave up his title as Earl of Home to become prime minister. At that time, David stopped using his courtesy title, Lord Dunglass.
Political and Business Career
After his father passed away in October 1995, David became the 15th Earl of Home. In 1999, new rules changed how the House of Lords worked. Many hereditary peers, who inherited their titles, lost their seats. However, David was one of 92 hereditary peers who were elected to stay in the House of Lords. He represented the Conservative party and sometimes served in important roles for them.
Besides his political work, Lord Home also had a career in finance. In 1974, he joined a company called Morgan Grenfell. He worked for them in different countries like Egypt, Hong Kong, and Thailand. From 1999 to 2013, he was the chairman of a private bank called Coutts & Co..
He was also the President of the British Association for Shooting and Conservation. This group works to protect wildlife and promote safe shooting. He was also the Chief of the Name and Arms of Clan Home, which means he was the leader of the Home family clan.
In 2014, Lord Home was given a special award called Knight of the Order of the Thistle (KT). This is a very high honour in Scotland.
Family Life
Lord Home married Jane Margaret Williams-Wynne in 1972. She was from the Williams-Wynn baronet family. They had three children together:
- Lady Iona Katherine Douglas-Home (born 1980)
- Lady Mary Elizabeth Douglas-Home (born 1982)
- Michael David Alexander Douglas-Home, 16th Earl of Home (born 1987)
