David Erskine, 13th Earl of Buchan facts for kids
David Stuart Erskine, 13th Earl of Buchan (born 6 November 1815 – died 3 December 1899) was an important person in Scottish history. He was an army officer and also enjoyed horse racing as a jockey. David was the son of Henry Erskine, 12th Earl of Buchan and Elizabeth Cole Shipley.
His Life and Work
David Stuart Erskine, who was known as Lord Cardross before he became Earl, joined the army. He served in the 35th (Royal Sussex) Regiment of Foot and rose to the rank of Captain. A captain is a leader in the army.
In 1857, when his father passed away, David became the 13th Earl of Buchan. An Earl is a high-ranking noble title in the United Kingdom. He was also appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Linlithgow. A Deputy Lieutenant helps the King's or Queen's representative in a county.
Family and Home
David Erskine married Agnes Graham Smith on 27 April 1849. They had two children together:
- Shipley Gordon Stuart Erskine, 14th Earl of Buchan (1850-1934)
- Hon. Albany Mar Stuart Erskine (1852-1933)
Agnes Smith died in 1875. Lord Buchan married again on 17 July 1876 to Maria James. She was the daughter of Lieutenant Colonel William James.
Erskine lived at West Hagbourne Manor in Didcot, which is in Oxfordshire, England. Towards the end of his life, he transferred his family estates in Linlithgow to his son, Lord Cardross.
David Stuart Erskine passed away on 3 December 1898, at the age of 83. Before his death, he became a Roman Catholic.
