David Henry Gambrell was an American lawyer and politician. He served as a United States Senator for Georgia. He was a senator from 1971 to 1972. Gambrell was born on December 20, 1929, and passed away on May 6, 2021.

Early Life and Education

David Gambrell was born in Atlanta, Georgia. This was on December 20, 1929. He went to Davidson College and graduated in 1949. Later, he earned his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1952. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserves.

After finishing his education, Gambrell worked as a lawyer. He was a partner at a law firm in Atlanta. In 1963, he started his own law firm, Gambrell & Stolz, LLP. He was also the president of the Atlanta Bar Association and the State Bar of Georgia. These groups are for lawyers in the state.

Political Career

Gambrell became involved in state politics. He served as the chairman of the Georgia Democratic Party from 1970 to 1971.

In 1971, a U.S. Senator from Georgia, Richard Russell, Jr., passed away. The Governor of Georgia at the time, Jimmy Carter, chose David Gambrell to fill the empty Senate seat. Gambrell served in the United States Senate during 1971 and 1972.

While in the Senate, he worked on important committees. These included the Banking Committee and the Aeronautics and Space Committee. He also served on the Senate Select Committee on Small Business.

In 1972, Gambrell ran for election to keep his Senate seat. However, he lost in the Democratic primary election. He was defeated by Sam Nunn, who then became the new senator. In 1974, Gambrell tried to become the Governor of Georgia. He did not win that election.

Other Activities

Beyond politics and law, David Gambrell was active in many other areas. He served on the boards of several companies. He also helped lead committees for colleges and universities. These included Davidson College, Harvard Law School, and Emory University.

He was involved in shaping education in Georgia. He helped draft parts of the Georgia Constitution related to education. He also served on the board of the Georgia Historical Society. This group helps preserve Georgia's history.

Personal Life

David Gambrell was married to Luck Flanders. They had four children together. Luck Flanders was known for her generosity. She donated land to help start East Georgia State College in 1971. The college's library is named after her. Luck passed away in 2015. David Gambrell later married Jeanne Martin in 2016. David Gambrell died on May 6, 2021.
