Early Life and Learning

David Heaton was born on March 10, 1823, in Hamilton, Ohio. His parents, James and Mary Heaton, had moved there from the eastern United States.

As a young man, David finished his early studies. He then decided to study law. He learned by working with an experienced lawyer, which was a common way to become a lawyer back then. After his training, he officially became a lawyer.

Starting His Political Journey

David Heaton became very interested in politics. In 1855, he was elected to the Ohio Senate. This was his first big step in public service.

Two years later, he moved to St. Anthony Falls, Minnesota. He quickly got involved in politics there too. From 1858 to 1863, he served as a member of the Minnesota Senate.

Helping During the Civil War

During the American Civil War, David Heaton played an important role. In 1863, he was chosen to be a special agent for the United States Treasury Department. He also worked as a US money deposit official in New Bern, North Carolina. This was after Union soldiers had taken control of the area.

Near New Bern, special camps were set up. These camps helped formerly enslaved people learn new skills. The goal was to prepare them for independent lives. In 1864, he was offered a high position as the Third Auditor of the Treasury, but he chose not to take it.

Serving in Congress

David Heaton decided to stay in North Carolina. In 1867, he helped write the state's new constitution during a time called Reconstruction. This was when the Southern states were being rebuilt after the Civil War.

When North Carolina was allowed to send representatives to Congress again, David Heaton was elected. He was a member of the Republican Party. He served in the Fortieth Congress and was reelected to the Forty-first Congress. His time in Congress lasted from July 15, 1868, until his death.

During his time in the Forty-first Congress, he led an important group. He was the chairman of the Committee on Coinage, Weights, and Measures. This committee helped decide how money was made and how measurements were used in the country.

His Legacy

David Heaton was nominated to run for reelection to Congress. However, he sadly passed away in Washington, D.C., on June 25, 1870. He was buried in the National Cemetery in New Bern, North Carolina.
