David Hill (whose Mohawk name was Karonghyontye, meaning "Flying Sky") was an important Mohawk chief. He was born on January 12, 1745, and passed away in November 1790. During the American Revolution, he was a respected war chief, often called "Captain" David Hill.

Who Was David Hill?

David Hill grew up in a Mohawk village called Tiononderoge. His parents were Aaron Hill (Oseraghete) and Margaret Green (Tekonwanonronnih). He had a brother named Aaron Hill (Kanonraron), who also became a well-known war chief during the Revolution.

His Family Life

Around 1770, David Hill married Esther Spring (or Springstead), whose Mohawk name was Dekahondagweh. They had six children together. David Hill was part of the Bear Clan, which was one of the main family groups in the Mohawk nation. He held a special title, Astawenserontha, which means "Wearing Rattles."

A Leader in War

During the American Revolution, many Mohawks, including David Hill, chose to support the British side. They were known as Loyalists. David Hill was a close friend and ally of important British figures like William Johnson and Joseph Brant, another famous Mohawk leader.

Fighting Alongside Allies

David Hill used his skills as a war chief to help the British and their allies. For example, in 1780, he and his brother Aaron joined British Captain John Munro on a military action near Ballston, New York. This showed his commitment to the Loyalist cause during the war.
