David Lindesay-Bethune, the 15th Earl of Lindsay, was a British soldier who lived from 1926 to 1989. For many years, he was known as Viscount Garnock. Besides his military career, he was very interested in steam trains.
Who Was David Lindesay-Bethune?
David Lindesay-Bethune was born in London, England, on February 9, 1926. His father was William Tucker Lindesay-Bethune, who was the 14th Earl of Lindsay. David went to two well-known schools: Eton and Magdalene College at Cambridge University.
His Time in the Army
After his education, David Lindesay-Bethune joined the British Army. He served as a junior officer in a famous group called the Scots Guards. He worked his way up to the rank of Major. In 1951, he left the army.
Later, in 1957, he received a special honor. He was made an Honorary Colonel of another army unit, the Fife and Forfar Yeomanry/Scottish Horse. This was a special title, and he kept the honorary rank of Colonel even after his time in the role ended in 1962.
A Passion for Trains
One of Lord Lindsay's biggest hobbies was steam railways. He loved trains so much that he even bought a real steam locomotive! In 1962, he bought a train called "The Great Marquess" from British Railways.
His interest in trains led him to become a leader in the railway world. In 1973, he became the chairman of the Severn Valley Railway. This is a special railway that keeps old steam trains running for people to enjoy.
His Family Life
Lord Lindsay married the Honourable Mary-Clare Douglas-Scott-Montagu in 1953. They had a son named James and a daughter named Caroline. Later, in 1969, he married his second wife, Penelope Crossley.
David Lindesay-Bethune passed away in 1989. His only son, James, then became the 16th Earl of Lindsay.
