James Randolph Lindesay-Bethune, also known as the 16th Earl of Lindsay, was born on November 19, 1955. He is a Scottish businessman and a politician from the Conservative Party. He holds the title of Earl of Lindsay, which is a noble title in Scotland.
Early Life and Education
James is the son of David Lindesay-Bethune, who was the 15th Earl of Lindsay. His mother was Mary Douglas-Scott-Montagu.
He went to school at Eton College, a famous boarding school. After that, he studied at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. He also attended the University of California, Davis in the United States.
Political and Business Career
James became the Earl of Lindsay in 1989, taking over the title from his father. He has been involved in politics and business for many years.
From 1994 to 1995, he was the vice-chairman of a special committee that focused on the environment. This committee worked with different political parties.
Later, from 1995 to 1997, he served as a government minister for Scotland. His official title was Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Scotland. In this role, he was in charge of important areas like farming, fishing, and protecting the environment in Scotland.
Lord Lindsay has also worked a lot in the food industry. He was the President of the National Trust for Scotland from 2012 to 2017. This organization helps protect Scotland's natural and historical places. In April 2021, he became the President of the Chartered Trading Standards Institute. This group works to make sure businesses are fair and honest with customers.
Family Life
In 1982, James married Diana Mary Chamberlayne-Macdonald. She is the granddaughter of Sir Alexander Somerled Angus Bosville Macdonald of Sleat, the 16th Baronet.
James and Diana have five children:
- Lady Frances Mary Gabinsky (born 1986): She is married to Rostislav Gabinsky. They have a son named Alexander Fabian (born 2018). They also have twin daughters, Stella Penelope and Diana Sophia (born 2023).
- Lady Alexandra Penelope Lindesay-Bethune (born 1988): She is married to Jack Coleman. They have two sons, Nicholas Tankerville Wallace (born 2019) and James Horatio Somerled (born 2021).
- William James Lindesay-Bethune, Viscount of Garnock, Master of Lindsay (born 30 December 1990): He is engaged to Lady Violet Manners. He is expected to inherit his father's title one day.

- Lady Charlotte Lindesay-Bethune (born 1993): She married Prince Jaime, Duke of Noto, on September 25, 2021. Their wedding took place at Monreale Cathedral in Palermo, Italy. They have a daughter named Francesca Sofía.
Diana, the Countess of Lindsay, is involved in social events. She is a patroness of the Royal Caledonian Ball, a traditional Scottish dance event. She is also a master of the Fife Foxhounds, a group involved in fox hunting.
