Early Life and Education
David John Mackay was born on December 25, 1933, in Eastbourne, England. His parents often lived abroad because his father worked as a "colonial administrator" in places like India and Ghana. David was the youngest child in his family. He went to boarding schools in England, Ireland, and Scotland.
In 1957, David met and married Roser Jarque in London. She was from Catalonia, Spain. After finishing college, David and Roser moved to Barcelona in 1958.
Architectural Career Highlights
David John Mackay was very active in designing buildings and areas in Catalonia. One of his big projects was helping to redesign the port area of Barcelona. He also worked on creating the Olympic Village there for the 1992 Summer Olympics. This village was a special place for athletes to stay during the games.
One of the last projects his company, MBM, worked on was building the Disseny Hub Barcelona. This is a large center and museum building. It officially opened in December 2014, not long after David Mackay passed away.
Vision for Plymouth
From 2003, David Mackay was the main architect for an important plan called "A Vision for Plymouth." This plan was also known as the "Mackay Vision." It was a major project to update and improve the city of Plymouth, England. The plan included changes like taking down the Plymouth Pavilions entertainment building.
