Growing Up and School
David Matthews was raised by his father, Ralph Matthews, Jr. His father was an African-American journalist. Ralph Matthews, Jr. was friends with famous people like Malcolm X and James Baldwin.
The Matthews family first lived near Washington, D.C.. In 1977, they moved to Bolton Hill in Baltimore. This area was mostly white and wealthy. It was surrounded by mostly Black neighborhoods.
David's memoir says he didn't fit in at first. He felt different from both the Black and white kids at his school. He chose to be seen as white.
David went to Baltimore City College High School. There, he continued to be seen as white. He also identified as Jewish. However, he felt he didn't know much about Jewish culture. He kept looking for his own identity.
David Matthews' Books and TV Work
David Matthews has written two non-fiction books. His first book is Ace of Spades (2007). This book is about his own life. It tells about his experiences growing up biracial in Baltimore.
His second book is Kicking ... and Saving Souls (2011). This book follows the exciting life of a person named Stefan Templeton.
Matthews' writing has appeared in well-known publications. These include The New York Times, Salon, and The Huffington Post. He also helped write "The Autobiographers Handbook." He wrote an introduction for a special edition of The Catcher in the Rye.
David Matthews has also worked in television. He has written for shows like Law & Order: Los Angeles and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. He also worked on HBO's Boardwalk Empire and Vinyl. He also wrote for F/X's Tyrant.
