David Graham Drummond Ogilvy, 10th Earl of Airlie (born May 4, 1826 – died September 25, 1881) was an important Scottish nobleman and a soldier. From birth until 1849, he was known as Lord Ogilvy. He played a role in Scottish politics and society during his lifetime.
Early Life and Learning
David Ogilvy was born in London, England. He was the first son of David Ogilvy, who was the 9th Earl of Airlie. His mother was Clementina Drummond.
He went to Christ Church, Oxford, a famous university. In 1847, he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree there. Two years later, in 1849, he became the Earl of Airlie after his father passed away. Later, in 1879, the University of Glasgow gave him an honorary degree.
What Did He Do?
David Ogilvy started his public service in 1847. He became a Deputy Lieutenant for an area in Scotland called Forfarshire. This role meant he helped the Lord Lieutenant with local duties.
In 1850, he was chosen to be a representative peer in the House of Lords. This meant he represented Scottish nobles in the British Parliament. He served in this important position for many years.
He was also involved in the military. From 1856, he was a captain in the local cavalry and rifle volunteer groups. In 1862, he received a special honor. He was made a Knight of the Order of the Thistle, which is a very high award in Scotland.
From 1872 to 1873, he held another significant role. He was the Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. This person represents the King or Queen at the annual meeting of the Church of Scotland.
His Family and Later Life
David Ogilvy married Henrietta Blanche Stanley on September 23, 1851. They had six children together: two sons and four daughters.
Their children were:
