David Pieterse Schuyler was an important person who was born in the Netherlands. He was part of the well-known Schuyler family. David worked as a fur trader, a captain, and a merchant. He also helped lead the city of Albany as an Alderman. An Alderman was like a city council member who helped make rules for the town.

David's Early Life

David Pieterse Schuyler was born in 1636 in the Netherlands. His parents were Pieter Tjercks and Geertruyt Philips Van Schuylder. David had a brother named Philip Pieterse Schuyler. Philip was the start of the famous Schuyler family in America. This family later included important people like Alexander Hamilton's wife, Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton. Other famous families like the van Cortlandt, van Rensselaer, and Livingston families are also connected to them.

Family Life and Children

David Pieterse Schuyler married Catharina Verplanck in 1657. They got married at the Dutch Church in New Amsterdam, which is now New York City. Catharina's parents were Abraham Isaacsen Verplanck and Maria de la Vigne.

David and Catharina had eight children together between 1659 and 1678. David Pieterse Schuyler passed away before November 29, 1692. His wife, Catharina, lived until sometime between 1699 and 1709.

  • Judge Peter Schuyler was born in 1659. He married Alyda van Slichtenhorst and they had seven children. Peter died at the age of 36.
  • Geertruyt Schuyler was born in 1661 in Albany. She married Willem Nicolasz Groesbeck in 1684 and they had six children. Geertruyt often helped at baptisms in the Albany Dutch Church.
  • Abraham Davidse Schuyler was born in 1663. He married Geertruy ten Broeck. Her father, Major Dirck Wesselse ten Broeck, was also a Mayor of Albany. Abraham helped his father with his trading business in the Native American lands. He even lived with the Seneca people for a while. In 1709, Abraham and his cousin Pieter Schuyler traveled to meet Queen Anne in England. He passed away in 1726.
  • Maria Schuyler was born in 1666 in Albany. She married Dr. Hendrick van Dyck. They had four children. Maria died in 1742 in Kinderhook, New York.
  • David Davidse Schuyler was born in 1669. He married Elsje Rutgers. They had six children. Like his father, David Davidse Schuyler also became a fur trader and later a Mayor of Albany.
  • Myndert Schuyler was born in 1672. He married Rachel Cuyler. Myndert was very active in the Albany government. He served as a juror, a constable, an Alderman, and even as the Mayor of Albany.
  • Jacob Davidtse Schuyler was born in 1675. He married Catharina Wendell and later Susanna Wendell. They had two children. Jacob worked as a constable, a firemaster, and a juror in his community. He passed away in 1707 when he was 31 years old.
  • Catharina Schuyler was born in 1678. She married Johannes Abeel. Catharina was the grandmother of David Mathews, who was a Mayor of New York. She was also the great-grandmother of the famous Seneca Chief Cornplanter.

Famous Descendants

David Pieterse Schuyler has many interesting descendants. His great-grandson, Johannes Abeel, was the father of the Seneca war chief Cornplanter. Another one of his descendants, Maria Helen Roosevelt, was the great-grandmother of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. This means David Pieterse Schuyler is connected to many important families in American history, including the van Rensselaer family and the Roosevelt family.
