David John Ryall (born January 5, 1935 – died December 25, 2014) was an English actor. He was known for his roles in plays, movies, and TV shows. You might remember him as Billy Buzzle in Bless Me, Father or as Frank in the BBC show Outnumbered. He also played Elphias Doge in a Harry Potter movie.

Early Life and Training
David Ryall was born in Shoreham-by-Sea, Sussex, England. He went to grammar schools in Shoreham and Wallington. In 1962, he earned a scholarship to study acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). While he was there, he even won an award for a musical performance.
Acting Career Highlights
After finishing his studies at RADA, David Ryall began working in different theaters. He performed in plays in cities like Salisbury, Bristol, and Birmingham.
Joining the National Theatre
From 1965 to 1973, he was part of Laurence Olivier's famous company at the Royal National Theatre in London. During this time, he acted in many important new plays. These included Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead by Tom Stoppard and The Royal Hunt of the Sun by Peter Shaffer. He also performed in classic plays like Guys and Dolls and The Beggar's Opera. In 1985, he won an award for his role in Coriolanus.
Television and Film Roles
David Ryall appeared in many popular TV shows and movies. In 1979, he had a small part in the BBC series Last of the Summer Wine. He was also in Lytton's Diary and Goodnight Sweetheart.

Later Career and Famous Roles
From 2007 to 2011, David Ryall played Frank, also known as "Grandad," in the BBC sitcom Outnumbered. His character had dementia, a condition that affects memory. He appeared in the first two seasons and in Christmas specials. The Christmas special in 2016 was dedicated to his memory.
A role many young people might know him from is Elphias Doge in the 2010 movie Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1.
In 2013, he appeared in a ghost story called The Tractate Middoth. He also played an old soldier in the drama Our Girl and Old Bert in The Village. Old Bert was a very old man who shared stories from his long life.
David Ryall's last acting role was as Tommy Mills in the TV show Call the Midwife. This episode was shown on March 1, 2015, and was also dedicated to him.
Family Life
David Ryall had three children. His son, Jonathan Ryall, was the manager of an Australian band. His daughter, Imogen Ryall, is a singer. His youngest daughter, Charlie Ryall, is also an actor, just like her father.
David Ryall passed away on December 25, 2014, at the age of 79.
