David William Sanford is an American composer and a jazz bandleader. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1963. He is known for creating exciting music that blends different styles.
Early Life and Musical Beginnings
David Sanford grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was born in 1963 into a family full of music. His parents and one grandfather led choirs. His other grandfather played jazz trumpet. Even his great-grandmother, Mozie Bass, wrote songs and music for church plays. David also has a brother who teaches music and sings in Colorado.
David loved big band music from a young age. He started playing the trombone when he was about ten years old. This early start helped him become the talented musician he is today.
Education and Career Path
David Sanford studied music at the University of Northern Colorado. He then earned two master's degrees. These were in music theory and musical composition from the New England Conservatory of Music.
In 1991, he began studying for his doctorate at Princeton University. He finished his studies in 1998. That same year, he started teaching at Mount Holyoke College. There, he teaches about music theory, composition, and music history.
Musical Achievements and Groups
In 2002, David Sanford received the Rome Prize. This award allowed him to live and work in Italy for a year. When he returned, he formed a group called the Pittsburgh Collective. This group included both classical and jazz musicians.
The Pittsburgh Collective recorded their first album live in 2005. A famous cello player, Matt Haimovitz, performed with them. David Sanford's music has been played by many well-known groups. These include the Chamber Society of Lincoln Center and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. His newest works are published by Oxingale Music.
