David Verburg (born May 14, 1991) is an American track and field star. He is best known for running the 400 meters race. David has won many gold medals in the 4 × 400 meter relay. These include wins at the 2016 Olympics and several World Championships.

David Verburg was born on May 14, 1991. His hometown is Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He went to E. C. Glass High School in Lynchburg, Virginia. He finished high school in 2009. After that, he studied at George Mason University. He earned a degree in Sports Management in 2013.

David's Athletics Career

High School and College Running

David Verburg was a very fast runner in high school. He still holds the 400 meter dash record at E.C. Glass High School. His best time was 47.15 seconds. In college, he ran for the George Mason Patriots team. He was named an All-American many times. This means he was one of the best college athletes in the country.

International Competitions

David started competing internationally in 2010. He went to the IAAF World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada. There, he won a gold medal in the 4 × 400 meter relay race.

In 2012, David won two gold medals. He competed at the NACAC Under-23 Championships in Irapuato, Mexico. He won gold in both the 400 meter dash and the 4 × 400 meter relay.

In 2013, David ran in the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He finished sixth in the 400 meter dash. Because of this, he was chosen for the U.S. team. He then competed in the 2013 World Championships in Athletics in Moscow, Russia. His team won a gold medal in the 4 × 400 meter relay. They also set a world-leading time of 2:58.71.

At the 2015 World Championships, David again ran in the 4 × 400 meter relay finals. His team won another gold medal. They set a new world-leading time of 2:57.82.

Helping Animals

In late 2018, David Verburg became famous for something special. He stopped traffic at an intersection in Clermont, Florida. He did this to rescue a turtle that was in the road. A video of his rescue went viral online. He was even a guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. In 2019, David started his own charity. It is called the Golden Tortoise Rescue Foundation. It helps turtles in his home state of Florida. Because he cares so much about animals, David also follows a vegan diet. This means he does not eat any animal products.
