Early Life and First Photos
David Yarrow's father, Eric Yarrow, was part of a famous shipbuilding family. He also led the Clydesdale Bank for several years.
David started taking photos when he was young. At age 20, while studying at Edinburgh University, he was named Young Scottish Photographer of the Year. In 1986, he photographed the FIFA World Cup in Mexico for The Times newspaper. His famous photo of Diego Maradona holding the World Cup trophy was seen all over the world.
From Finance to Photography
After finishing university, David Yarrow first worked in finance. He spent eight years as a stockbroker in London and New York City. In 1993, he became a director at Natwest Securities. Then, in 1995, he started his own investment fund called Clareville Capital in London.
Even while working in finance, David Yarrow always loved photography. People noticed his "double-life" as a business leader and an artist. By 2021, he was focusing more on his photography, especially his staged story shoots like the Wild West series.
How David Yarrow Takes Photos
David Yarrow believes that to take better photos, you need to be in front of more interesting things. He has photographed many different subjects. These include the Dinka people in South Sudan, famous people like Diego Maradona, Cindy Crawford, and Cara Delevingne, and various wild animals around the world.
When photographing dangerous wildlife, Yarrow often uses a camera controlled from a distance. This allows him to get unique shots looking up at the animal from the ground, which gives a different view.
He also uses a special method to get animals close to his camera. He coats his camera casing with different scents that attract specific animals. He researches to find the best smell for each animal he wants to photograph.
Photo Exhibitions and Sales
David Yarrow's photos have been shown in famous galleries. These include the Saatchi Gallery in London and Christie's global headquarters.
His photographs have also been sold at big auctions like Sotheby's. In 2017, his photo "Mankind" sold for £60,000. In 2018, "The Wolf of Main Street" sold for $100,000 in New York, which was four times more than expected. Another photo, "78 Degrees North," set a new record by selling for £81,250 in London. In 2019, "Africa" sold for $106,250, and "Old Testament" sold for $52,500.
