Early Life and First Steps in Modeling
Cindy Crawford was born in DeKalb, Illinois, on February 20, 1966. She has two sisters, Chris and Danielle. Her brother, Jeffery, sadly died from childhood leukemia when he was three years old. Cindy has shared that her family has been in the United States for many generations. Her background is mostly German, English, and French. She even found out she is related to European nobility and Charlemagne!
When she was in high school, a local photographer asked to take her picture. This photo was for a local publication and became her first cover! The positive feedback she got made her decide to try modeling. She signed with a small agency, which later became part of Elite Model Management. In 1983, at age 17, she entered Elite's "Look of the Year" contest and reached the national finals.
Cindy graduated from DeKalb High School in 1984 as the top student, known as the valedictorian. She even got a scholarship to study chemical engineering at Northwestern University. But she only went for one semester. She decided to leave college to focus on her modeling career full-time. In 1986, she moved to New York City and joined the Elite New York modeling agency.
Becoming a Supermodel
In 1987, Cindy appeared in the opening of the movie The Secret of My Success. Three years later, she was on the cover of British Vogue with other famous models like Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell. These models also appeared in George Michael's music video for "Freedom! '90". Cindy later starred in music videos for Jon Bon Jovi, Duran Duran, and Taylor Swift.
Cindy was on the cover of many popular magazines. These included Vogue, W, People, and Harper's Bazaar. By 1998, she had appeared on over 500 magazine covers! She also walked the runway for top fashion designers. Some of these were Chanel, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, and Christian Dior. She was also part of many big fashion campaigns for brands like Versace, Calvin Klein, and Revlon.
In 2002, People magazine named Cindy one of the 50 most beautiful people.
The red Versace dress she wore to the 63rd Academy Awards in 1991 became very famous. Many copies of the dress were made. In the early 1990s, Cindy also made popular exercise videos. These included Cindy Crawford: Shape Your Body and Cindy Crawford: The Next Challenge. She even made a fitness video for kids called Mini-Muscles with Cindy Crawford and the Fit-wits.
Cindy was also on TV and in movies. From 1989 to 1995, she hosted MTV's House of Style. She appeared in popular Pepsi commercials, including one during the Super Bowl XXVI in 1992. Pepsi even remade this commercial in 2016, with Cindy in it again! In 1995, she played the main female role in the movie Fair Game. While the movie wasn't a big hit, Cindy continued to have guest roles on TV shows. She often played herself.
Cindy also appeared in magic shows with David Copperfield. She helped him with illusions like being levitated and sawn in half!
Beyond Modeling
Cindy Crawford stopped full-time modeling in 2000. Now, she only appears in fashion magazines sometimes. In 2005, she started a beauty product line called Meaningful Beauty. She has also had some cosmetic procedures.
In 2005, Cindy launched her own furniture line called "Cindy Crawford Home Collection." She helped design the furniture to fit families' needs and her own style. She also has furniture lines with other stores like Rooms to Go.

In 2017, Cindy joined other supermodels like Claudia Schiffer and Naomi Campbell to close the Versace fashion show. This show honored the late designer Gianni Versace.
In 2019, Cindy and her husband, Rande Gerber, helped buy a famous Hollywood deli called Nate 'n Al. This helped keep the restaurant open for future generations.
In 2023, Cindy was featured in a four-part Apple TV+ documentary series called The Super Models. This series also included Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, and Linda Evangelista.

They have two children: a son named Presley Walker Gerber (born in 1999) and a daughter named Kaia Jordan Gerber (born in 2001). Kaia has also become a successful model, following in her mother's footsteps!
Cindy is 5 feet 9 inches (175 cm) tall. She has brown hair and eyes. Her most famous feature is a mole above her upper lip, which is often called her "beauty mark."
Helping Others
When Cindy was ten years old, her three-year-old brother, Jeff, died from leukemia. Because of this, Cindy has made helping children with leukemia a big part of her charity work. She donates money from her calendars to medical research. She has also supported the pediatric oncology program at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where Jeff was treated.
