Wizards of Waverly Place is an American fantasy teen sitcom created by Todd J. Greenwald. It was broadcast on the Disney Channel from October 2007 to January 2012. The show stars Selena Gomez as Alex Russo, a teenage wizard living in New York City. Alex trains alongside her brothers, Justin (David Henrie) and Max (Jake T. Austin). The siblings must prepare for a future contest where only one wizard gets to keep their magical abilities.
The series was created by The Walt Disney Company following hits like Lizzie McGuire and Hannah Montana. It's a Laugh Productions produced all four seasons of the show. It became very popular with young viewers and won several awards. A television movie, Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie, was released in 2009. What Is the Story of Wizards of Waverly Place?
The story follows three wizard siblings who live in an apartment on Waverly Place in Greenwich Village, Manhattan. Their father, Jerry Russo, is a former wizard who teaches them magic lessons in a secret lair. Jerry and his wife Theresa run a sandwich shop styled like a subway station. According to wizard rules, the siblings must compete in a magical tournament when they grow up. The winner keeps their powers forever, while the other two become regular humans. Jerry tries to teach them to solve problems without relying on magic all the time.
Alex often uses spells to take shortcuts in everyday life, which leads to humorous mistakes. She must keep her magical identity a secret from mortals. In the second season, Alex shares her secret with her best friend, Harper Finkle (Jennifer Stone). By the third season, Harper moves in with the Russo family. In the fourth season, the siblings face tough training tests before the final competition. In the end, Alex wins the contest and keeps her magic, Justin becomes the headmaster of WizTech, and Max happily inherits the family business.
Themes of Growing Up and Family Values
The show explores what it is like to grow up with a secret identity. It connects with the fantasy of having magical powers, much like Harry Potter or Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Even though magic creates funny situations, the episodes show that real life is about hard work and honesty. The Russo family shares an Italian and Mexican cultural heritage, and the parents work hard in the service industry. Most of all, the series teaches that family love and loyalty are far more valuable than magical powers.

Disney discovered Selena Gomez at an open casting call in Texas when she was twelve years old. She sang the theme song "Everything Is Not What It Seems" and brought a clever, funny personality to Alex. David Henrie was chosen to play Justin, the book-smart older brother, and he even wrote two episodes of the show. Jake T. Austin played the quirky younger brother Max. David DeLuise and Maria Canals-Barrera were cast as the parents, Jerry and Theresa. Jennifer Stone played Alex's cheerful best friend Harper, providing comic relief. Guest stars included Bridgit Mendler as a vampire named Juliet and Gregg Sulkin as a werewolf named Mason.
Filming and Spin-Off Adventures
The show was filmed at Hollywood Center Studios in California using a multi-camera setup. Over four seasons, the series produced 106 episodes. Following its massive success, Disney released several related projects:
