Wizards of Waverly Place: Spellbound is a fun video game for the Nintendo DS. It was released on November 16, 2010. The game is based on the popular Disney Channel TV show, Wizards of Waverly Place. It's a new adventure after the first game, which came out in 2009.

Playing the Game

Just like the TV show, this game follows the adventures of Alex, Max, and Justin Russo. They are teenage siblings who are also secret wizards! The game is split into many smaller stories. These stories all connect to a bigger plot about a magical dress. Alex is making this dress for a special wizard fashion show.

How You Play

The game mixes two types of play: point-and-click adventure and action mini-games. It focuses more on the adventure parts. In each story, the Russo kids learn a new spell. You then use this spell to solve puzzles in different areas. For example, early in the game, Alex needs to sneak out of class. She wants to see a special globe that shows where her dress is. To do this, she uses a "Move" spell. She moves bookshelves to find a mouse hole. Then, she can turn into a hamster to escape! As you unlock new spells, the kids get more ways to solve puzzles. These puzzles get harder as you play.

Fun Mini-Games

Between the puzzle areas, you'll play short action mini-games. In one game, Alex and Justin have to find their way through a hedge maze. In another, Alex needs to serve subs and collect money at her family's sub shop. She has to do this before her best friend Harper and her mysterious boyfriend leave. Both types of play come together in challenging games. You unlock these challenges by finishing levels. Each challenge builds on an action from the level, like the hedge maze. But it adds more difficulty by making you use spells. When you complete challenges and other tasks, you unlock cool new outfits for your D-Gamer character!

Game Challenges

The adventure parts of the game are usually easy to figure out. But sometimes, the game mechanics can make things tricky! The main challenge is called the "observation meter." The Russo kids are not allowed to use magic when grown-ups are watching. Of course, they often do, which gets them into trouble!

In the game, this is shown by a meter with an eye icon. If the eye is open, someone can see one of the kids. Or they might see an object the kids are trying to enchant. When this happens, the meter fills up. If the meter gets full, the kids get caught! Then you have to start that part of the game over. Grown-ups are often placed right near where you need to go. Even if they look away, it can be hard to cast a spell without being seen. Patrolling enemies are even tougher. If a kid gets too close to their path, they will stop and stare. This can be frustrating and might make you fail a task.

Looks and Sounds

Wizards of Waverly Place: Spellbound has a special art style. The characters look smaller and cuter, almost like "Chibi" characters. But the game still keeps the bright and colorful look of the TV show. Even in this smaller style, you can easily recognize the characters. Many places from the show, like the Loft and the sub shop, also look familiar. Parts of the game use the same "dancing" screen transitions as the show. These might repeat, but they help the game feel like the show. Even the music has the same silly tunes from the TV series. They are simpler versions, but still fun!
