The Disney Channel show Wizards of Waverly Place was created by Todd J. Greenwald. It first aired on October 12, 2007, and finished on January 6, 2012.

The series is about the Russo family. This family includes Alex (Selena Gomez), her older brother Justin (David Henrie), and their younger brother Max (Jake T. Austin). The three Russo siblings are wizards who are learning magic. They live with their Italian-American father, Jerry (David DeLuise), who used to be a wizard. Their Mexican-American mother, Theresa (Maria Canals Barrera), is a normal human.

The siblings must keep their magic powers a secret while living in the human world. When they finish their wizard training, the three siblings have to compete in a wizard competition. This competition decides who will become the next family wizard and keep their powers.

Meet the Main Characters

Alex Russo: The Middle Child

Alexandra Margarita Russo (Selena Gomez) is the only girl among the three Russo siblings. She is the middle child. Alex is clever, likes to rebel, and is very outgoing. She often doesn't do her best in school. She usually gets into trouble because of her many plans, which often involve magic. Alex and Justin Russo are the only characters who appear in every episode of the show. The story often focuses on Alex and her journey to become a wizard.

Justin Russo: The Smart Older Brother

Justin Vincenzo Pepé Russo (David Henrie) is Alex's and Max's older brother. He is the oldest of the three Russo siblings. Justin is very smart and is often seen as a "nerd." This is because he belongs to many clubs and has learned over 5,000 spells! He also studies how to hunt monsters. Justin is very knowledgeable about wizardry, just like his father, Jerry. Jerry originally won the Wizard Family Competition against his siblings, Kelbo and Megan.

Max Russo: The Youngest Sibling

Max Russo (Jake T. Austin) is the youngest of the three Russo siblings. At the beginning of the show, Max doesn't try very hard. However, he grows and learns more as the series goes on. In season four, Alex and Justin accidentally turn Max into a little girl. She is then called "Maxine" (Bailee Madison). Maxine stays a girl for five episodes. This starts with "Three Maxes and a Little Lady" and ends with "Back to Max," when the spell is undone.

Harper Finkle: Alex's Best Friend

Harper Finkle (Jennifer Stone) is Alex Russo's best friend. She used to like Justin Russo, Alex's brother. But later, she falls in love with Justin's best friend, Zeke Beakerman. Harper is like many teenagers: she expresses herself well but can be a bit unsure sometimes. Unlike Alex, Harper is a hard-working student and usually has a positive attitude. In season 2, Harper finds out that the Russo family has wizard powers.

Theresa Russo: The Mortal Mom

Theresa Russo (Maria Canals Barrera) is the mother of Alex, Justin, and Max Russo. She co-owns the Waverly Sub Station with her husband, Jerry. Theresa is often the more serious parent in the family. Theresa is Mexican American. Maria Canals Barrera, the actress, has Spanish family roots through her Cuban parents.

Jerry Russo: The Former Wizard Dad

Jerry Russo (David DeLuise) is the father of Alex, Justin, and Max Russo. He co-owns the Waverly Sub Station with his wife, Theresa. Jerry used to be a wizard. He chose to give up his powers to marry Theresa, who is a normal human. This was because of a rule that wizards could not marry humans. Jerry is Italian American. David DeLuise, the actor, also has Italian family roots.

New Characters in Later Stories

• Billie van Heusen (Janice LeAnn Brown) is Justin's daughter from the future with Juliet van Heusen. She is a wizard-in-training who comes to live with Justin and his family in the new show.
• Roman Russo (Alkaio Thiele) is a wizard. He is Justin and Giada's son, and Alex's and Max's nephew. Alex really loves him.
• Giada Russo (Mimi Gianopulos) is Roman's mother and Justin's human wife. Justin chose to give up his powers to marry her.

Friends and Schoolmates

• Zeke Beakerman (Dan Benson) is Justin's best friend. He is in the same grade as Justin and takes advanced chemistry with him. Later, he starts dating Harper.
• Mr. Herschel Laritate (Bill Chott) is the principal of Tribeca Prep High School.
• Hugh Normous (Josh Sussman) is Alex's friend from WizTech, the wizard school. He first appeared in the episode "Wizard School."
• Dean Moriarty (Daniel Samonas) is Alex's boyfriend in the second season. He makes temporary tattoos and likes cars.
• Talia Robinson (McKaley Miller) is Max's girlfriend. She first appears in "Back to Max" and clearly likes Max a lot.
• Gigi Hollingsworth (Skyler Samuels) is Alex's rival. She has tried to embarrass Alex since kindergarten.
• The Wannabes (Kelsey Sanders and Heather Trzyna) are called "the wannabes" because they want to be as popular as Gigi.

Magical Beings and Teachers

• Mason Greyback (Gregg Sulkin) is first mentioned in season 2. He is an English student in Alex's art class who likes Alex. They later start dating. Mason is a werewolf.
• Juliet van Heusen (Bridgit Mendler) is a teenage vampire and Justin Russo's main girlfriend. She is more kind than most vampires because her parents let her have a soul.
• Professor Crumbs (Ian Abercrombie) is the headmaster of WizTech. His character is a bit like Albus Dumbledore.
• Kelbo Russo (Jeff Garlin) is Alex, Justin, and Max's uncle. He is Jerry's brother. Kelbo is a full wizard who often uses his powers in a childish way. He seems just as irresponsible with magic as Alex is.
• Alucard and Cindy van Heusen (JD Cullum and Anne Ramsay) are Juliet's vampire parents. They own a rival sandwich shop called the Late Nite Bite. The name Alucard is "Dracula" spelled backward.
• Chancellor Rudy Tootietootie (Andy Kindler) is the head of the monster hunting council.

Other Notable Characters

• Monotone Woman (Amanda Tepe) played many different characters in the first two seasons. She always speaks in a flat, unchanging voice. She has been a store manager, waitress, and security guard, among other jobs.
• Stevie Nichols (Hayley Kiyoko) is a new troublemaker at school in season 3. She and Alex become close friends.
• Rosie (Leven Rambin) is Justin's angel girlfriend in the "Wizards vs. Angels" story.
• Gorog, Angel of Darkness (John Rubinstein) is the leader of the Dark Angels. He is a main bad guy in the "Wizards vs. Angels" story.
• Conscience (Moises Arias) is Max's inner thoughts about right and wrong. Max accidentally turns him into a real person.
• Frankie/Joey (Paulie Litt) is Justin's enemy in season one. He returns in season 3 with his name changed to Joey.

• Archie (Steve Valentine) is a clever but unlucky illusionist and trickster. He is a funny character in the movie.
• Giselle (Jennifer Alden) is a female wizard. She was turned into a parrot and tricks Archie and the Russos into helping her find a magical stone.
• Javier (Xavier Enrique Torres) works at the hotel where the Russos stay in the Caribbean.

From The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex

• Dominic (Beau Mirchoff) is a mean and tricky wizard. He was one of Justin's helpers at WizTech. He is later found to be Gorog's nephew.
• Carmela (Natalia Nogulich) is an Italian cousin of Jerry Russo. She was a wizard-in-training with him.
• Francesca (Antonella Lentini) is another Italian cousin of the Russo family.
