About Alex and her Family
Wizards of Waverly Place is all about Alex Russo and her two brothers, Justin and Max. They are training to become the one wizard in their family who gets to keep their powers forever. The Russo family lives in New York City's Greenwich Village. Their dad, Jerry, used to be a wizard, and their mom, Theresa, is a regular human.
Alex and her brothers go to magic classes taught by their dad. They often get distracted and use their magic for everyday things. The family also owns a sandwich shop called the Waverly Sub Station. They have to keep their magic a secret from almost everyone. Alex's best friend is Harper Finkle, who is a mortal. Alex eventually tells Harper that her family are wizards.
In the end, Alex, Justin, and Max must compete to see who will be the only wizard in the Russo family. Besides magic, Alex loves art and wants to be an artist. She also dates a werewolf named Mason for a while.
Alex's First Adventures
Alex first appears in the very first episode of Wizards of Waverly Place, called "Crazy 10-Minute Sale". She wants to go to a big sale at a clothing store to get ahead of her rival, Gigi. But she has wizardry class. So, Alex decides to clone herself! She hopes her clone can go to class while she goes to the sale.
However, her plan goes wrong. The clone can't talk and barks like a dog because of a mistake in the spell. This shows how Alex often tries to use magic to solve problems, but it usually causes more trouble!
Throughout the first season, Alex has many magical mishaps. She tries to make things better with magic, but they often backfire. Alex goes to Tribeca Preparatory High School for most of the show. She also attends WizTech, a special wizardry school, during one summer.
Relationships and School Life
Alex has a boyfriend named Riley in the first season. Their relationship ends quickly when he sees her eating too much chocolate. But it starts again when she convinces him she brings good luck to their school's baseball team. They break up again because Alex gets jealous easily. She even brings a mannequin to life to make Riley jealous, but then she moves on to another boy.
In the second season, Alex's magical problems continue. She joins a school game called the Quiz Bowl. She wears "Smarty Pants" that give her infinite knowledge. But she wears them too long and her legs turn into skeletons! Luckily, they get fixed.
Alex also meets Dean Moriarty, a new student, in this episode. Alex's enemy, Gigi, finds out that Alex likes Dean. Alex tells everyone, including Dean, to stop Gigi from doing it first. Alex and Dean admit they like each other and start dating.
Later, Alex gets involved with another boy from WizTech, Ronald Longcape, Jr. Ronald likes Alex and turns into Dean to break up Alex's relationship with him. Alex starts dating Ronald, thinking she has no other choice. She agrees to go to WizTech with him. There, she finds out Ronald kidnapped Dean and put him in a block of jelly! Alex realizes she truly loves Dean and leaves Ronald. However, Alex and Dean break up again shortly after.
Alex's Personality
Alex is often described as a "mischievous tomboy". She can be "dry, lazy, and a bit of a jerk" sometimes. She's a "wisecracking underachiever" who likes to use magic to make high school easier. One time, under a truth spell, Alex said her attitude is just "a defense mechanism to hide my desire to really be liked."
Alex's personality is very different from her older brother, Justin. He is hardworking and studious. Even though Alex can be rude, she is a good person deep down. She is often seen as not caring about other people's feelings. But she later admits this is a way to hide that she really wants people to like her.
Alex often uses magic to solve her problems. This usually creates more problems than she started with. She is confident and relies on magic to get her out of trouble. Alex doesn't do very well in high school, but she is great at art. She also hasn't read many books.
Alex is the middle child and the only girl in the Russo family. She often argues with and insults Justin. But later, it's shown that she does this because she looks up to him and wants to be like him. Her parents sometimes seem to favor Justin, which makes Alex feel jealous. Alex and Justin are very different. Justin is responsible and fair, while Alex is often lazy and uses magic to cheat. She feels insecure when Justin succeeds with his hard work. Alex struggles in both magic and regular school. She fails tests and uses magic to pass assignments. She wants to become the family wizard, not just for the power, but to beat Justin.
Despite her flaws, Alex is very generous, loyal, and caring. She cares deeply for her best friend Harper. She even tells Harper about her family's magic in the episode "Harper Knows" because she felt bad about lying. Alex doesn't like "fake people" or silent movies.
