She sees herself as someone who waits for the world and then goes for what she wants. Her first album talked about relationships, breakups, feeling alone, self-confidence, and friendship.

Mendler is a mezzo-soprano singer. She plays guitar, keyboard, and keytar. Her voice has been described as strong and sweet, with a unique "metallic tone" for a young singer.
